A wild story out of Louisiana, where the body of a man was found inside a chimney -- 27 years after he disappeared. And, adding to the strangeness, his family never reported him as missing.
According to the Daily Mail, the story began in 1984 when 22-year-old Joseph Schexnider missed a court appearance on charges of possessing a stolen vehicle. Police showed up at his house in the town of Abbeville to arrest him. He ran off, and that was the last anyone ever saw of him.
His family never reported him missing because they said it was not uncommon for him to leave town without notice. However, police believe they never made a report because they knew he was a wanted man.
It turns out Schexnider was in town the entire time. In May workers renovating the local bank found a skeleton inside a chimney. It took a couple of months, but the remains have been identified as Schexnider's.
Police believe Schexnider died of dehydration after getting stuck, possibly while breaking into the bank to rob it.
"We've not ever recovered one from a chimney before, that's a little unusual, so this was the first type of recovery like that that we've ever done before," Mary Manhein, Director of the LSU Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services Lab, told KATC-TV.
"Hopefully this will give the family some closure. There's no signs of foul play in this investigation, so as of now it's going to be a closed case," said Abbeville Police Detective Lt. David Hardy. "His mother is upset that she lost a son of course, but she is at ease that she now knows where her son is." [opposingviews.com]
