Seven deminers who were kidnapped in western Afghanistan the kidnappers beheaded them, police said on Sunday (10/07/2011), while NATO announced the deaths of three soldiers due to Taliban attacks.
The seven men were members of 28 deminers who were kidnapped on Wednesday (06/07/2011) in a district so the Taliban insurgency in the central province of Farah. Until now no one had claimed responsibility for mass kidnappings.
“Seven deminers were beheaded. We found one dead body of their dead bodies and the rest were tribal leaders,” said Mohammad Chaws Malyar, deputy head of the Farah provincial police.
Groups of criminals and rebels repeatedly kidnapped dozens of foreigners from Pakistan and the United States-led invasion in 2001 that overthrow Taliban government, but most eventually freed after giving ransom or exchange for the release of prisoners. The deminers were working on the domestication of Mine Action Agency for Afghanistan, an Afghan charity based in Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan.
Last December, 18 Afghans working for the Mine Detection Center kidnapped in eastern Khost province, bordering Pakistan. They were released unharmed a day later in a joint operation of foreign troops, Afghanistan. [inunews.com]
