Violence doesn’t have a religion

  • Share

Using violence based on religion is blatantly misleading; religion does not lead to violence but to love and peace instead. The suicide bomb that occurred in the Bethel Injil Sepenuh Church (GBIS) Surakarta, also known as Solo, Central Java, is not linked with one particular religion and the fatalities should be perceived as victims rather than as the believers of a certain religion. In my point of view, the problem should be located in the victim-perpetrator relationship without adding religion into it.

Religion, in one way or another, has nothing to do with violence. The main course of religion is peace-love. The history of religion is the peace-love narrative. The life narratives of the main figures in all religions have clearly shown the language of respect and peace. Despite the main message of religion, doctrinal interpretations have created the problems among and between religions. Since the interpretation is a human-made elucidation, the action that leads to violence is a personal responsibility.

In the context of the recent suicide bombing in Solo, the perpetrator has hidden behind the strict interpretation attached to the Jamaah Ansharut Tauhit (JAT). Yet, the action of killing other people is a particular matter, Islam is far from the actions of suicide bombers. The perpetrator was not a Muslim, it was Pino Damayanto or Ahmad Urip instead. Instead of associating the victims with religion, we should rather name them according to their names. The violence is not associated with any religion.

Moreover, the violence in Solo was not the act of a religious group. It’s not an Islamic act, rather a JAT action. Confining the violence to the individual believers can reject the evil idea of a clash of religions. Thanks are due to Muslim and Christian leaders who stand up and criticize the perpetration of suicide bombs as an unreligious act.

Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama, the biggest Islamic groups in Indonesia, have criticized the person who is responsible for the suicide bomb as wrongly interpreting Islam. Both groups have also asked the government to end terrorism in Indonesia as soon as possible. This is a strong signal that violence does not have a religion. Perpetrators are criminals regardless of religious background.

By locating violence on the empirical basis, we let the judicial mechanism work according to the principle of equality before the law. At this point, the violence done by Pino Damayanto is not a religious issue; it’s a “law enforcement” subject. As the problem is in the law enforcement area, the issue should be away from any political rumors and games.

As a matter of fact, putting the suicide bomb in the exclusive domain will keep it free from bias. As usual, the government expresses sympathy and blames the perpetrator publicly, but the real action to cut off the root of terrorism and violence might not be finished yet.

Unlike with counterterrorism in other countries, Indonesia seems to be playing games with violence and terror. The government is reluctant to fight against terror and violence. JAT has allegedly been involved in more than one suicide bomb and terrorist act, but it does not make any sense that the Indonesian intelligent organizations has failed to crack down on the group terror.

In the course of private and state actions, John Finnis says, “Public acts must be strictly impartial between the members of the public – and public-community here includes not only the state but also political parties, etc. Public acts must look to the general good, in the sense of the good of each, and there is no room, as there is in private morality”.

For Finnis, if a state does not take action against a blatantly personal action in public, the action could lead to a justification (John Finnis, 2011: 84). The bottom line in an Indonesian context is that the state, including the political parties, should take action against violence and terrorism, unless public will justifies the violence as virtuous conduct.

In fact, the justification of violence could create a wrong collective imagination on terror and violence. People will be haunted by the terrorism nightmare and the feeling of weakness. Vigorous action will send a message that the state is for everyone. Also, actions can craft a common vision of how people should live together in the state. Humans are imaginative beings. Therefore, imagination plays a pivotal role in bringing communities together into a state.

A state’s serious action against terrorism is the sermon to make violence a private matter. The bomb at the church in Solo was not violence against Christians rather it was against Indonesian State supremacy. The perpetrator is not a Muslim but a citizen who is committed to crime.

The heart of Indonesia is unity in diversity. Hence, the heart of Indonesia is under attack when a particular person launches violence toward others. For this reason, Indonesia and Bhinneka Tunggal Ika – Unity in Diversity – are two sides of one coin. One can not separate the principle from Indonesia.

Who are troublemakers behind UK riots?

  • Share

Images of youths wearing balaclavas and hooded sweatshirts ransacking shops, rioting and torching buildings continue to provoke outrage in the UK.

Those behind the masks have been demonized by some as opportunistic criminals from ghettoized communities dependent on welfare handouts.

London Mayor Boris Johnson said those involved were guilty of "wanton criminality" for which there was no justification. Right wing newspaper columns have blamed youngsters "who believe there is no need to work."

Who are troublemakers behind UK riots?n

But academics and community leaders say the identities of those who have taken to the streets and their reasons for doing so are far more complex -- representing a tinderbox of economic and social tensions whose explosion was almost inevitable.

On the third night of violence across London, as police in riot gear fended off hails of missiles in streets filled with smoke from burning cars, it was clear their adversaries hailed from different backgrounds -- young and old, black and white.

Likewise, in retail parks where looters forced open the chain store security gates and helped themselves to flat screen televisions and sporting goods, both men and women could be seen running away with bags of stolen goods.

Says Paul Bagguley, a sociologist from the University of Leeds, while the identities of those involved may vary, different types of disorder tends to attract different social groups -- patterns he says matches previous uprisings in Britain.

"In terms of direct conflict with the police, it is mostly young men, but in terms of looting, it's more mixed -- young men and young women involved," he said.

Bagguley said, however, that those involved share low-income backgrounds, suggesting that while the violence may have been triggered by anger over a fatal police shooting last week, the long-term impact of the global economic downturn has helped fan the flames.

"I strongly suspect that it's people who are unemployed or on very low income who are involved in this. People are constantly bombarded with advertising and they see these shops full of goods they can't afford and would like to buy and are being encouraged to buy, there's a lot of that going on."

And, says University of Bedfordshire criminologist John Pitts, recent government youth service cutbacks and job losses in the public sector, a key employer in some of riot-hit areas, has exacerbated the situation.

"I think there's a mounting sense of discontent in those neighborhoods, which doesn't excuse it, but does go some way to explaining the animosity."

While many of those involved may be from low income households, Bagguley said it is too simplistic to class perpetrators as products of a benefits culture, an allegation often leveled by right wing commentators in Britain.

--John Pitts, criminologist

Community leaders instead blame a sense of disenfranchisement felt by young people living in cities like London where disparities between rich and poor leave many feeling resentment towards authorities that fail to address their problems.

"Although produced by our consumerist culture, they have no stake or identification with this society, no interests and thus nothing to lose," says Symeon Brown, an activist and social commentator from Tottenham in London, where riots first took place on Saturday.

Lee Jasper, a prominent community leader in London agreed, saying it was wrong to categorize looters and rioters as criminals without taking into account simmering resentments -- not just about last week's shootings, but other perceived police wrongdoings.

"There is a tremendous anxiety, anger and demand for justice and that has triggered legitimate demonstrations," he said.

"You can dismiss them all as thugs, but if people think the solution to the problems we're seeing today is simply locking up thousands of people, I think they're mistaken.

"There are underlying causes which means that people in inner cities, who feel alienated and disconnected from wider society, don't have a stake in it and therefore see no reason to adopt its moral values."

This, says Bagguley, is compounded by the lack of alternatives for people whose lives are not defined by employment or family commitments -- perhaps due to their youth (and even, in some cases, because schools are now out for the summer).

"I think what's been happening is there are a lot of young people who are available and unoccupied, so it's not so much their sense of grievance about their situation, but that there's nothing else for them to do."

The Cheating Wife

  • Share

"So lately my wife has been working alot of late shifts, and for the past couple of months she has been carpooling with a male co-worker. At first I didnt mind in case she has car trouble or something like that, but it seems they have become a little bit more than friends.

You know the scenario, the phone calls that hang up, she starts wearing nice clothes to work and talking about him all the time then abruptly stops leaving an uncomfortable silence. If im out in the garage when she gets home (usually after midnight) he just drops her off and leaves, but if the lights are off in the garage and I'm in the house (they think Im sleeping) they sit out in the car for like twenty minutes.I asked her once what they were doing, and she said"Just talking" ....whatever.

So last night I decided to see whats really going on out there. So I leave the garage door open ,and turn off all the lights.About the time she usually gets home, I go out in the garage and wait.. In a few minutes, his car pulls into my driveway, and Im hiding behind my Lancer.

When his headlights shine through my garage and onto the car, I see something that I just couldn't believe. The rear camber is severely wearing my rear tires. Now I have to get an alignment. Should I go with -1.5 with 1/32" toe out or just leave the toe at 0?"

The moral of this story? Women are always lame, so worry about the problems you can change.

True Stories of a Cheating Wife

  • Share

I work with a lady who has had several affairs with various men. She's awful. She doesn't tell me. I hear it from her best friend. I know her husband and he's not the cheating kind at all. They have 3 kids. What kills me is that she thinks it's funny he is so clueless. He is. Some of the people she has slept with are his own friends. No...I'm not one of them. I think if he ever finds out it will hurt him to find out what a fraud she really is. And I'm sure she will cry and maybe even blame him for it.

My wife had an affair that lasted 3 months. By the third month she had slept with her lover more than 10 times. She confessed after I confronted her with information I had gathered from her lover. I was devastated but the first thought that came to my mind was forgiveness. I loved her deeply. However, the pain never went away and have stayed with me since. I had decided to give the marriage a second chance and she had since then tried her best to repent her ways and mend the relationship.
But a year has passed and not a day goes by without memories of the relationship comes to hurt and grieves me. I have tried to erase all thoughts but to this day, I fail to forget. Some days are OK but some days it gets pretty bad. I have managed to hide my pain after hearing her confessions. I have since, tried to get her to tell me more as the need to know seems so important to me. But she just won't let up or tell because she thinks its over, so why bring up the past when I have accepted her back? I am still in pain. I have read almost all the articles on the Net on this. I have tried so many ways to forget. It's really crazy. And so true, you can forgive, but you can't forget.

Like many stories I've read, I started to get a gut feeling that something wasn't right. She had always been unaffectionate, but now it seemed she was more distant and uncaring. I was poking around in the temporary internet files and was opening them in notepad. That's when I found a message from the guy she was in contact with. The sickening feeling that came over me is beyond words. I should have waited and collected more evidence, but I was devastated and confronted her immediately. I got the "it's only fantasy" excuse crap.

Then she has the nerve to get angry at her for violating her privacy! Can you believe that! I became very depressed after that, being betrayed, lied to, but most of all because I wasn't first in her life. The feelings of rejection are overwhelming. Here I was, thinking I'm a good husband, faithful to her and concerned with the lives of our three kids - and here she is, who thinks so little of me. Talk about someone who has no sense of right and wrong. Anyway, I got over it and thought everything was back to normal. I was so wrong! I was looking for a cigarette in her purse when I found a cell phone. This time I didn't say anything.

I created an online account for the phone and the password was sent to the phone, which I wrote down. Then I went into the phone logs online and found out she and this guy were calling each other on a regular basis, even after I thought the online stuff was over. I confronted her about this and she put up attitude like it was wrong for me to snoop. If it was "only fantasy" then why was she calling him? What a stinking liar. I thought we cleared this up again but then I found out she called him the minute we got back from vacation. The online stuff was never over either.

I installed internet monitoring software on our computer and found the e-mails were still going back and forth, even after I thought this was all in the past and we had been getting along. To me that was it. I left. I was devastated and humiliated and afraid of the future. I'd be divorced and alone. Away from my kids. The kids would be devastated. Going through the divorce process. Explaining it once it became public. We are now in counseling and but I am indifferent to her. I don't trust her. I wish I had never met her. A liar that treated me like nothing. If we never had kids I would be gone. Don't be foolish and try to win over your spouse. Don't think that loving your spouse will make them love you. Don't give yourself to someone who doesn't give back, the disappointment will be ten times worse.

My wife and I have been together for 8 years. A few months ago I started getting that weird feeling that something wasn't quite right. At first I just ignored it because I didn't want to face that possibility, my trust in her had always been total. But after another week there were just too many signs and finally I told her that I knew she was screwing around. She broke down and told me everything. After a day or two we talked and decided we would try to work things out because we still love each other and have 2 young children. I told her I would trust her again but she would need to reassure me. And I did trust her to a point, I installed key logger software and got the password to her email account and changed her settings so it would keep a copy of every email she sent. After a few weeks of swearing that she had had no more contact and that she was trying to work things out with me she had a class to go to one night. I logged on and checked her email and found one with the subject line "I LOVE YOU".

It was a very graphic email about how much she loved this guy and then a more graphic description of what she enjoyed about their sexual relationship. I took all of her clothes, makeup, shoes and jewelry and tossed them out in the driveway in the rain and called her cell phone and left her a message to come get her stuff because it was getting ruined out in the rain. I then went back to the computer and read the email again. I realized that it sounded like she had finally found true love. It occurred to me that true love is something she should want to share with everyone. So I forwarded the email to everyone in her address book; her mom & dad, her boss, all her coworkers, aunts & uncles & cousins. I told her later I did her a favor because now she wouldn't have to explain to everyone why she was getting a divorce.

Wow. I had heard "on the street" a couple of years ago about "the guy whose wife left her family and took off to Ireland or someplace for a guy she met online". I just saw your website for the first time today. Though my wifes infidelity wasn't as "odd" as yours.....I DO understand (we had 3 small children at the time). My wife had an affair at work....and filed for divorce 5 or 6 months later. After telling me about a divorce in a "dear john" letter". I stayed at "our house" for 3 weeks.....I also went to Radio Shack and bought a voice activated tape recorder and secretly hooked it up to the telephone lines. The day I finally found the tape of her and her lover. It ripped my heart out.....

I sat there listening and was gasping for breath. so I DO understand!!! Oh well....divorced now for 6 years. But!!!!...2 1/2 years after my divorce I met a girl on the "net" ....turns out she was married (she never told me), (but divorced after we met without my knowledge)..and she was Biploar manic depressive to boot. You ever thought about the possibility of your wife having some type of "hidden mental illness"...? To make a long story short.....I totally agree with you....and now people are starting to understand. I have always said...."the internet will break-up ALOT of marriages

After 24 years of marriage my wife told me one day that she was moving out. I said go ahead. She said ok. Then a week later she came to me and said "I'm not moving out, you move out". That is when it all got complicated. I finally filed for divorce and now am divorced. In this case it was alcohol that she loved more than me. She has since sobered up and want to go back. I am the most confused person in the world. I still live alone while I pay for the house she lives in.

I am 52 yrs old...and would have been married 30 years this past april 24th my ex left me jan 10th...she met a guy online from NY city...and is still with him there. after i found out i was hurt, angry, and all of the other emotions that come in to play when you know that someone you love very much has torn the very life and breath out of your very being. what is it with the internet? has the world gone mad? i am now doing much better thank you and have found another lady that is so much different than my ex. thank God for real people. yes folks there is hope for a better life...just believe in yourself and things will get better. thank you GOD
About 2 years ago I found out about my wife's chat room affairs. She kept a 9 page document on disc, which

I discovered one night by accident. All the excuses came out - it was a fantasy - I was lonely - it has done our sex life good - I was depressed, and so on and so on. We had been married for 12 years and had a 7 year old son at the time. I very nearly divorced her - only our son prevented me from doing this. I still don't trust or respect her (I keep on thinking what a slut she is), even after all this time. Anyone else had this experience? Does the trust and respect ever come back?

My wife just out of the blue changed from a 32 year old mother and spouse, to a hormone-raging 18 year old. Not only does she continue to have an affair, she has totally abandoned our 10 year old son. She spends about 5 minutes a week with him! I did everything a good husband/father is supposed to do, but in return I got only hate and deception.

It sure is good to see a site like this up and running. This internet cheating problem is really getting out of hand. I have heard other stories of spouses being caught flat-footed (mostly men, it seems), but they are second-hand stories. My own started on Dec 26th, 1999. My then wife suddenly asked me to move to my parent's place for a week so she could "think". On Jan 1, 2000, she announced that she wanted a divorce. No counseling, no chance, just divorce. Over the next few months, I found that she had been in contact with several guys from England to the eastern USA and even some locally. She withdrew to the PC big time and even shirked many motherly duties. I got lucky compared to most guys, in particular. The kids (3) are with me and she is in the southern USA, remarried (to the 3rd guy she was with in less than a year). I guess, in a way, I came out very lucky. But it has been hard on the kids at times (especially my teenaged daughter). I do my best and she does talk to her Mum sometimes by phone or email. So does my youngest. (He was only 8 when all this hit the fan.) My oldest boy is very angry still. He talks to her very seldom. So, there you go. Another story out of many.

Last year my wife bought me one of those Online games that you make a simulated person and have them make a life for themselves. This game as it turned out quickly became one of HER favorite hobbies. So she opened an account for herself too. We had lots of fun interacting with each other online... The game is played with other real life people all over the world. In the game there is a IM ability. Making it possible to have one on one conversations. About two months ago my wife decided to make another Simulated person for another city in the game.

She started staying up late playing the game all the time. Most times until 2-3am and get up for work by 6am. I was concerned and curious. I made a simulated person to go into that city to see why it was such a good city. What I found broke my heart. My wife and some other guy had made a home with each other and expressed there true love for one another in the profiles. I asked my wife what is going on he said "its only a game". I told her that the comments made me feel more than a little uncomfortable. It was around this time that she started telling me I was "always up her butt" and "she needs time to herself to play". She would get very upset if I was to visit her Simulated house. It was around this time that she also told me that she didn't she was in love with me anymore. MY HEART NEARLY STOPPED. My wife had been having an online affair with someone from the game. It turned out that they had been communicating via email and cell phone. I was assured of this when I checked her cell phone messages. There is not much more that hurts then to hear "I love you" on a message to your wife form someone else. My wife eventually told me what was going on. We sat and held each other for hours crying and kissing. She did not know how she could have let this happen. She since stopped all communication with the other guy. She has since been heartbroken by the whole thing and still does not know if she loves me.

We have made love since then and it is incredible for me and for her. I can still see love in her eyes but she says she is still very confused. We have both been married before and have four kids. I love my wife dearly. I truly feel she is my soul mate. She once felt this way about me but something changed in her. All of this has just come to surface over the Christmas season. I feel I am at my weakest moment I have been in for the past 15 years (that is when my first wife was having affairs, yes affairs") My heart is broken and I find it hard to breath at times. The one that I love has given her love to someone online. If anyone has any words of wisdom or comments please share them. My words of wisdom would be this... The online games are not "just games". If your spouse is playing them more then they are talking to you THERE IS A PROBLEM and you should talk to them about it immediately.

To all of my friends at chatcheaters.com. As the new year begins, I just wanted to pass on a big "thank you and keep up the good work" message. Your website was a true Godsend to me this year. It helped me in noticing the signs of infidelity, as well as helping me to relate to those who have also been deceived by their spouses. Nobody could possibly understand the pain and devastation that one feels when they are cheated on. I would rather get into a fist-fight than be cheated on by someone who means the world to me...its the pain that comes unexpectedly that you can't brace for that hurts the worst. Back on Mothers Day weekend is when I became suspicious of my (ex)wife's on-line activity after I dropped her kids off at a late-night movie. I then researched the subject of infidelity in the library as well as on the internet.

That's when I came upon your website. I printed out the chart showing the signs of infidelity and it was all there, starting with the quick click-off. Nine days later, I found the "smoking gun", when I found our phone bill hidden inside of her purse. I submitted my story in August or September, and you posted it on the narrow right-hand column of your page during the fall. I'm very flattered that the closing statement of my story still remains anonymously on that column. (The truth hurts, but its best that you know)... At this time, I lived with my wife and her kids in a house that we purchased together, in Plymouth, Indiana...120 north of Indianapolis, the major midwestern city mentioned in my story. I have returned to South Bend, IN, where I have worked for 24 years, and now I live closer to my two teenage boys from my first marriage.

Since the end of the marriage this year, I've made a few new acquaintances, but more importantly, I've re-dedicated myself to the family and friends that I already have. My life is coming back together nicely. Even my golf game is improving. My love-life is pretty much non-existant, but I'm not a lonely person by any means. News flash: There's more to life than sex! I got together with my former stepchildren at Christmastime at their father's home, and they still respect me, and they understand why I left their mother. Her life has become an absolute train wreck. She's become completely consumed by her on-line world on the World-Wide-Weeja*board.(That's what I referred to as the "www" of any kind of on-line chat). She has been kicked off the internet repeatedly at her job, became insubordinate, and eventually terminated. Now she'll lose her home, as well as the respect of her kids. Her 18 year-old daughter refers to her as "my mom, the internet whore".

I also understand that what I discovered back in May was only the tip of the iceberg. I know that there are a lot of honorable, trustworthy available women out there, a lot even in my community, but after two broken marriages, I don't think that I could ever trust again. If I hook-up with the most honest woman in the world, I would still fear the worst. Not only that, but I've already owned two computers, and I can't ever see myself purchasing another. I let her have the one she cheated with, and the older one broke down years ago. Fortunately, my brother allowed me to use his in order to submit this. Thank you, and God bless all of you.

My wife was criticizing and aloof though she still loves me. She wants to take separate vacations. She spends extra time at work with her male coworker. She wants me to allow her to flirt more & wants me to "flirt more". I'm so hurt that I am "not myself". She vehemently denies having another affair. I happen across e-mails that are explicit not just in "wants" but "dids". I have more but this hurts and p---es me off too much. Yes we have kids. and have been married since 90.

The Story of Shelley Lubben, Former Porn Star

  • Share

shelley lubben
This is the story and the recognition of Shelley Lubben former porn actress famous, about the bad and the ins and outs of it is immoral industry. This is derived as a lesson for us all. "Believe me, I know, I used to never do it all the time and I do it because my soul and my love for power to money."

" I never liked sex. Even I do not want it and in fact I drank more Jack Daniels (the type of alcoholic beverage Similar Jhonny Walke) than with the men who paid like me to "pretend" in the movie. Yes It does not exist between us blonde girls who love being in porn movie."

" We hate being touched by strangers who did not care about us. We hate to be considered low by them, men with sweat and stench. Some of us often to vomit in the bathroom during filming breaks. While others tried to calm ownself by smoking Marlboros nonstop."

" But the porn industry (porn industry) want that you will always think that if we porn actresses love sex. They want you to believe that we are happy being harassed like animals in a variety of scenes in the movie. The truth, porn actresses often do not know what scenes they would do when he first came to the set and we were only given two choices by the producer: "Do or Home Without Pay. Working or not be able to work again" Yes it is true we have a choice."

" Some of us are in great need of money. But we were manipulated and coerced and even threatened. Some of us contracted AIDS because of the profession. Or infected with herpes and a variety of other venereal diseases are difficult to cure. One artist after filming a porn movie with pain all day after arriving home to shoot his head with a pistol. "

" Most of the porn actresses may come from a broken family and had experienced sexual harassment and rape of his own family or neighbors. When we were kids we just want to play with dolls, not get traumatized when a grown man be above our body. So since childhood we learned that sex can make us valuable. And with all the horrible experiences we deceive you in front of the camera when in fact we hate in every minute of it. "

most porn actresses of her life dependent on alcohol and narcotics. And our life has always been filled with fear of HIV or other venereal diseases such as Herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia, etc.. haunt us every day. According to Shelley notes in his website. Eleven pornography porn star died of HIV, suicide, murder and drugs in 2007. Between 2003 and 2005, 976 players with 1153 reported positive results STD. 66% of players exposed to Herpes.

" Indeed, we checked every month but you know, if it can not prevent us from contracting deadly diseases. In addition to disease, no less gruesome scenes of filming, many of us have wounds or sores tear on our organs. Outside shooting we often wish I could live a normal life. But it is very difficult to establish normal relations with men "'normal"', so it means most of us is married to film director porn or live life as a lesbian. "

" Make me, the moment will not be forgotten is that when my daughter accidentally saw me, her mother who was kissing naked with another girl. SHe will definitely continue to remember it well. On another day we can change like zombies with a beer bottle in his right hand and glass of whiskey in left hand. We do not like to clean so often times we have to hire a maid to clean up our dirt.
Also hate to cook their own porn actresses. Usually we order our food then throw up again because most of us suffer from BULIMIA, a kind of symptom hunger is never satisfied. "

" For porn actresses who have children, we are the worst mother. We screamed and even hit our kids for no reason. Often when we were so drunk as to our children who were 4 years old we were dragged off the floor. And when there are guests (mostly for reasons of sex), we have to lock our children first bedroom and told them to shut up. If my girl I used to equip children with the pager and told her to wait for me in the garden until I'm done with my guests. "

" * All Trickery * If you can see more in the life of a porn actress you will probably lose interest in watching porn. Our actual fact a porn actress wanted to end all this shame and all the trauma in our lives. But unfortunately we could not do it alone.
We hope you help our men, fighting for freedom and our honor. We want you to embrace us when we remove the tears and heal the wounds in our hearts. We hope you will pray for us and hopefully God will hear and forgive all our mistakes in the past. Adult film industry is not more than * "false and deceptive camera sex." Believe *.!

Harrods shop girl Melanie Stark forced to resign as she refuses to wear make-up

  • Share

For five years, Melanie Stark worked diligently as a sales assistant at Harrods and won a commendation for customer service.

But she says bosses finally decided her face didn’t fit – because she refuses to wear make-up.

Miss Stark, 24, resigned after she was twice sent home from the Knightsbridge department store for refusing to comply with its strict dress code.

On another occasion, she was made to work in a stockroom.

She says she was even offered a cosmetics workshop and told: ‘You can see what you look like with make-up.’

'I was appalled,’ she said. ‘It was insulting. Basically, it was implying it would be an improvement. I don’t understand how they think it is OK to say that.

'I know what I look like with make-up. I have used it, though never at work. But I just could not see how, in this day and age, Harrods could take away my right to choose to wear it or not.’

Miss Stark, of New Cross, South London, who left last week, added: ‘I was happy there, but I’ve been driven out.’

A copy of the 13-page dress code was handed to Miss Stark when she joined the HMV department in Harrods aged 19.

She worked part-time for the first three years while a philosophy, religion and ethics student at King’s College, London, then full-time for £8 an hour.

Miss Stark says she complied with all other aspects of the dress code and Harrods did not seek to enforce the make-up regulations until last August when she was sent home after a ‘floor walk’ by senior managers.

She wrote to Harrods saying: ‘To be told that one’s face is inadequate is extremely degrading.’ The next day she was put to work in the stockroom where customers could not see her.

Then she was summoned to a meeting with her floor manager and, she claims, told: ‘You wear make-up or you leave.’

It was suggested she could ‘just wear eyeliner and lipstick’ but Miss Stark stuck to her guns, returning to work without any make-up.

Three weeks ago a new floor manager told staff: ‘Girls, I want you to be made up.’

Miss Stark was briefly transferred to HMV’s store in Bayswater, West London, while a resolution was sought, but had already decided to resign. She has yet to find another job and said: ‘I’ve been upset by the whole ordeal.’

Clare Murray, of the specialist law firm CM Murray, said Miss Stark could have grounds to sue Harrods if she took the store to an employment tribunal claiming sex discrimination.

To do so, she would have to argue that the dress code is imposed differently, in more detail or more rigorously on women than on men.

But UK case law supports the right of employers to impose dress codes with different requirements for women and men provided the overall effect is broadly the same between both sexes.

Harrods has an equally strict dress code for men including, for example, that sideburns must be no wider than one inch.

The HMV concession is on the third floor of the store and staff there must meet Harrods’ requirements for appearance. Miss Stark has no issue with HMV.

A Harrods spokesman said: ‘All our staff are subject to a dress code which they sign up to on joining the company, which relates to an overall polished appearance.

'Our records show that discussions with Melanie Stark concerned a general lack of adherence to the dress code.

'She subsequently decided to leave of her own accord with no reference made to dress code.’

Murder victim' returns home after 10 years

  • Share

A convicted murderer in Central China's Henan province had been serving a sentence for almost 10 years when his alleged victim returned home.

In 1999, Zhao Zuohai, a villager in Zhaolou village of Zhecheng county, Shangqiu city in Henan, received a suspended death sentence for killing his fellow villager, Zhao Zhenxiang, after the two had a fight.

But local residents in the county could not believe their eyes when the so-called victim showed up on May 2.

"He returned to the village a few days ago, partially paralyzed. He had never married and has no place to live. Nobody knows where he is now," Yu Hantao, a villager said on Friday.

Yu said Zhao had run a small business in Taikang county in southeast Henan province over the years.

Zhao Qingxi, the vice party secretary of the village, also confirmed with China Daily that Zhao Zhenxiang had indeed returned home.

"They (the police) are also inquiring into the case that happened 10 years ago," he said.

Li Zhongyuan, the village's party chief, said Zhao ran away 10 years ago because he was scared after assaulting Zhao Zuohai with a knife in the fight.

Local police officials refused to comment on Friday.

Yu Fangxin, Zhao Zuohai's brother-in-law, said he was requested by "someone from high above" not to talk to the media.

"An investigation team from Beijing has arrived in the village. I was told that my brother-in-law will be released from the prison within a week," Yu said.

He said his brother-in-law will be faced with a broken family, because his ex-wife has remarried and took away two of their four children. The other two were adopted by other families.

Zhao Zuolan, Zhao Zuohai's sister, said his brother had previously confessed to the crime due to police torture.

"My brother told me he was really treated unjustly," she said, adding that Zhao even showed her the scar on his forehead left by a gun-thump.

About 10 years ago, when a beheaded body was found in a well, Zhao Zhenxiang's relatives believed the body was their family member, who by then had been gone for about a year. They reported to the police and the suspect was taken away.

The Shangqiu Intermediate People's Court made the judgment, saying the killing occurred after the victim caught the murderer having sex with a local woman. A fight broke out because the victim also had an affair with the woman.

The convict did not appeal to a higher court. However his sentence was later commuted to 20 years in prison as an award for his good behavior in prison.

Qiu Baochang, a Beijing-based lawyer, said the case reveals flaws in the investigation process of the local law enforcement authorities.

"Judgments were made before enough evidence was collected," he said.

The case echoes a far-reaching one in 1998 in which then 32-year-old She Xianglin was sentenced to 15 years in prison for allegedly murdering his wife.

The husband was reputedly having an affair before his wife disappeared from their hometown in Jingshan county in Central China's Hubei province in January 1994.

Three months later, a body found in a local pond was identified as Zhang by her relatives. She, under high suspicion, was arrested in late April 1994.

However on March 28, 2005, She's wife returned home, by which time her husband had served seven years of his sentence.

He was announced innocent and released on April 13, 2005. In September the same year, he received a compensation of 460 thousand yuan ($67,000) from the local court and government.

Latoya Jackson Says Husband Tried To Pimp Her To Mike Tyson

  • Share

La Toya Jackson is opening up about her difficult past and revealing shocking details about her past abusive marriage.

In an appearance on CBS' "The Talk" Tuesday, Jackson, 55, said her ex-husband, Jack Gordon, once offered former boxing champ Mike Tyson the chance to sleep with her — for a hefty price.

Gordon, who passed away in 2005, allegedly told Tyson that sleeping with Jackson would cost him $100,000.

Jackson, the older sister of late pop icon Michael Jackson, also claimed her manager ex forced her to take part in group sex against her will.

"I was in brothels and everything," she said. "[It was] everything I was against. He made me do Playboy twice and had me sit on the stage and say 'Oh no, it was all my idea.' And I had to do that because I knew what he said he would do, he would do it."

THE NASTIEST DIVORCE BATTLES IN HOLLYWOOD

Having allegedly suffered abuse and death threats from her then-husband during the tumultuous marriage, Jackson said she wanted to tell her story in her new autobiography, "Starting Over."

"I wrote this book for women. It was very difficult for me, because when [Jack] took me, at that time I was a strict Jehovah's Witness and I knew nothing about the world whatsoever," she said.

But women aren't the only ones who can benefit from Jackson's book, which was written before her famous brother passed way in 2009.

"It's about trying to get out of an abusive relationship or a relationship that someone is controlling you and there are people that come into your life and surround themselves around you," she said. "They control your finances, everything that you do you have absolutely no say so whatsoever.

"In the last days, I found my brother being in that same situation as I was in. I was fortunate enough to get away and start over but unfortunately he was not. It was really heartbreaking."

Jackson has stated many times in the past that she suffered years of mental and physical abuse from Gordon, who she says forced her into marriage in 1989 and bullied her into cutting off ties from her family and friends. She filed for divorce in 1996 and sued Gordon for gender-based violence. [nydailynews.com]

248 women report being raped by soldiers in DR Congo in June

  • Share

Some 248 women said they were raped by soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Sud-Kivu province last month, local medical reports showed Monday, in a region the UN has called the world's "rape capital."

A hospital doctor in Nakiele told AFP that 121 local women reported being the victim of rape on the night of June 11 to 12.

The previous night 55 women reported being violated in nearby Abala, a nurse said, while another health worker said 72 women in the village of Kanguli said they were also raped that night.

Nakiele village chief Losema Etamo Ngoma told AFP that the rapes and looting were committed by at least 150 armed men under the command of national army colonel Nyiragire Kulimushi, also known as "Kifaru".

The soldiers arrived in groups from 11:00 am (09H00 GMT) on June 11, he said, and were told by Kulimushi to find something to eat.

"At about 8:00 pm I heard women's cries everywhere. I asked to meet the colonel but an officer told me I couldn't so I returned home," he said.

"They left the village in the morning at about 5:00 am. I went around the houses and I met women in tears," he said.

The village chief said they told him: "The soldiers raped us."

A 28-year-old mother of two told AFP how two soldiers demanded she open her door before threatening to kill her and then raping her.

"After they left I began being sick," she said.

Kulimushi, who fled a military base south of Nakiele on June 8, is a former member of the Mai Mai tribal militia which integrated into the national army in 2009 following a peace agreement with Kinshasa.

The base at Kanada was created recently following a restructuring of operational forces in the west of the DR Congo, with regiments formed from different militia groups.

Kulimushi, who was until then in charge of a zone in the Fizi area, refused to see his officers excluded from the commanding ranks in the new set-up, according to a military source who did not want to be named.

Following the attacks government spokesman Lambert Mende said forces were actively looking for Kulimushi and that a special tribunal would be set up to look into the case.

The United Nations, rights groups and foreign governments have long complained about impunity for heinous crimes committed by soldiers in DR Congo.

His face was downcast embarrassed when the camera lights flashing spotlights and some journalists continue to point to her sweet face. Susi (18) were white women and long hair and a slender body.
Initially I was chatting at a friend. I need a job and needed money.

How are you? "Well, Mas," he said quietly with his face still bent.

That night Susie along with seven other women who performed the operation netted a combined staff of North Monument Village.

From the beginning, Susi kekeuh refused if the so-called officer arrested while prostituting themselves. "I just got back streets of the same friend in Cipanas. Who says I want to sell yourself arrested," he said.

But finally, slid recognition of his mouth when he secured while being alone with a man from the Middle East. Surprisingly, 18-year-old woman had been diving contract marriage to eleven times! Marriage contracts Susi much done with a number of men from the Middle East. The practice of marriage contract that he lived for eight months.

When asked about the practice of temporary marriages which did as much as eleven times, Susi evasive. However, slowly the woman who lived in the area Cijantung, East Jakarta, it started to open up. With a voice a little heavy, sepunggung haired woman was admitted began to plunge into the "black world" since he was 17 years old.

"I am married to my husband just a year. After that I was divorced by her husband," he said.

Forced marriages performed when Susie was sitting in class III school in Jakarta. Marriage was also then make Susi quit school three months before the national exam junior.

Early marriages are performed Susi failed in the middle of the road and brought great influence to the life of Susie. "School stops, and my husband just left. Who try to baseball stress," he said.

Economic needs

The condition worsened when he lost his beloved motorcycle. In fact, Honda Supra Fit black color is lost while parked at his home is a source of livelihood the father, whose results are used for family needs.

"My father ngojek in Jakarta, but then stopped because the bike is gone," explained Susie.

As the first child with two brothers who were little and see the condition of families in need of cost, Susie felt the need to take responsibility. "Initially I was working at the store, but quit because of baseball at home. Udah so small salary," he argued. "I have a sister both still in school, 6th grade and 4th grade," he added.

Until one night, Susie told her girlfriends who are also friends while still in school through the Facebook social networking facilities. "At first I was chatting at a friend. I need a job and need money," he said.

A few days later, Williams met his friend somewhere. "It was immediately dikenalin same pimp. At first I refused because I know what kind of job would be. It must be told to become commercial sex workers (CSW)," he said.

Susi again makes economic necessity as an excuse to quickly get money. Harshness of life in Jakarta at a cost of living according to Susi's not cheap to make choosing a shortcut to get money. Although Williams initially refused to plunge into the "black world", he finally lulled by the gentle persuasion and the lure of a pimp in the number of Jakarta.

"Find a hard money. Ngelamar Want to work, only primary school diplomas, who wants to receive," he said.

Finally mid-October 2010, Susie began to cultivate the world as husband and wife contract with the man from the Middle East. According to Susi, the Ontario sebuatan for Arab tourists, who come to Indonesia, especially in Jakarta, will always find a local woman to be his wife. During settled somewhere in Indonesia, they need the sex distribution.

"But the baseball they want to prostitution, so they are looking for women who want to be a temporary wives," he said.

In addition to paying an expensive and do not have to bother prostituting themselves on the edge of the highway, Susie feels that his actions did not violate. Woman plays about 156 cm body was so angry when I called a prostitute.

Each time she became his wife in a marriage contract with a Middle Eastern man, who received Susi paid varies. "It depends on the length until when. If ten days pay $ 7 million. But if only two days at least Rp 700,000 to Rp 1 million," he said.

But, from paying that much, he only gets half as the wife of the contract. "The pay is divided into two equal mami (pimp) I. I can only half," he said [kompas]

Mini Skirt History

A History of the Miniskirt

The 1960s was a politically charged decade of revolution and change. Apollo 11 became the first capsule to land on the moon, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 became law, Vietnam was raging, Beatlemania was sweeping the world, birth control pills hit the market, and a new cult of youth, known as “Youthquake,” had radically taken over many areas of life. In the midst of these dramatic political and cultural changes emerged one of the most enduring and controversial icons of the era: the miniskirt (or mini skirt).

Mini skirt

Existing, surprisingly, since ancient times, this small and sexy piece of fabric has embodied some of the most fascinating paradoxes of our times as it suggests both empowerment and vulnerability, independence and a desire to please, an attempt to cover and to reveal, maturity and playfulness, and liberation and exploitation. Simultaneously condemned and loved, the miniskirt exploded into the political landscape and had women (and men) suddenly paying attention to what had been hidden years before—a woman’s legs.

In the Beginning Was . . . the Miniskirt

High in the mountains in some of Europe’s oldest villages, archaeologists have recently unearthed ancient figurines dating between 5400-4700 B.C. What is remarkable about the figurines is not only their age, but also that the female figurines appear to be beautifully dressed in miniskirts not unlike the fashionable miniskirts of the 1960s, prompting some scholars to speculate that miniskirts were common in the earliest of civilizations (Derbyshire 2007). Interestingly, these figurines are not the only evidence of “ancient miniskirts. For example, an ancient Egyptian fresco shows a female acrobatic dancer wearing a “mini skirt” seemingly made out of cotton that shows off both her hips and her legs (Gandolfi 1989).

Early Twentieth-Century Skirts and Sowing the Seeds of Change

While the miniskirt may have existed as long as civilization has, it is probably only recently that it has evoked powerful political and cultural implications. In the mid 1800s, women in Europe and America were generally believed to be the weaker and more vulnerable sex. Politics, business, and physical activity could be dangerous for women, and tight corsets with long, restrictive skirts generally reflected these beliefs (Weaver 2003).

After WWI, however, advances in women's emancipation and post-war escapism led to the “flapper” style, an androgynous style with hemlines up to a woman’s knee. After dropping to a more sober calf length during the early 1930s, hemlines rose to just below the knee during WWII, partly due to mandatory fabric rationing during the war (Lehnert 2000).

After the end of wartime restrictions on cloth, women were ready for elegance and femininity, and the fashion industry promoted the “New Look” epitomized by Christian Dior. The New Look was mature and sophisticated, with an exaggerated hourglass figure and long, lavish hemlines (Steele 1997). While the New Look reflected the “best years of our life” consumerism that followed WWII, the “teddy boys” and beatniks of the Beat generation were already sowing the seeds of discontent in 1950s materialism—a discontent that would find its full voice in the 1960s and dramatically change hemlines forever (Reilly 2003).

The 1960s and the Politics of the Miniskirt

Teenagers Create Their Own Political (and Fashion) Space

Before the 1960s, young women had been expected to dress in the style of their mothers, which was usually loosely based on Parisian couture. For example, as late as 1962, a Sears catalog portrayed mothers and daughters as “patchwork pals” who were overjoyed that they are wearing identical dresses. Looking back on the late 1950s, the English designer Sally Tuffin remarked, “There weren’t any clothes for young people at all. One just looked like their mother” (Steele 1997).

However, by the 1960s, youth protests and demands for individual expression revealed that young adults were gaining a self-conscious awareness of themselves as a distinct and unified group that was able to respond to political events in ways that were different from their parents (Cawthorne 1999). Youngsters felt they no longer needed to follow the rules of bourgeois morality and manners, which they saw as hypocritical and based on double standards. As this young political entity gained a voice, they created a space for a new and distinctive fashion that embodied their own political views—not their parents’.

The Miniskirt as an Expression and Tool of 1960s Feminism

Growing awareness of feminism also paved the way for a different fashion for women. For example, in 1963, American Betty Friedman published The Feminine Mystique which deconstructed the myth of the happy housewife and expressed the desire of women to explore other roles. In addition, the 1960s saw a dramatic increase in women attending universities and entering the workforce, especially with the advent of the “temp agency” which allowed greater flexibility in when and where a woman wanted to work.

This decade also saw laws passed that helped protect and empower both married and divorced women (Diamond and Diamond 2006). Perhaps most important was the advent of the birth control pill, which removed fears of pregnancy and helped usher in the sexual revolution (Cawthorne 1999). The image of a woman was beginning to dramatically shift from being a wife and mother to a young, single, carefree girl proud of her sexuality and confident with her power. The miniskirt would express—and serve as a tool for—this growing woman’s movement.

A New Class of Young Consumerism

The young generation was indeed growing up rebellious and articulate—and with more money than they’ve ever had before. Young people suddenly became a powerful class of consumers who demanded a fashion that matched the spirit of youth. Consequently, the whole structure of the fashion system was challenged from the youth in the streets as the prestige of “couture” came under attack or, worse, seemed irrelevant (Cawthorne 1999). Upstart designers and boutiques began to cater to a new youth market that could now buy what they wanted—and to older women who began to scramble to look like their daughters.

“The Mother of the Miniskirt” : Mary Quant

When a young upstart British designer named Mary Quant opened her boutique Bazaar in 1955 on King’s Road (a mod and rocker hangout), she was poised to spearhead a fashion revolution. Without any real training in fashion, but with a finger on the pulse of everyday fashion of the street, she represented a distinctive breakaway in fashion. She began to sell clothes that reflected the ideas of the day’s youth and that had nothing to do with established Paris fashion houses (Lehnert 2000).

When she raised the hemline of her skirts in 1965 to several inches above the knee, the iconic miniskirt was born. Named after her favorite car, the Mini, the miniskirt was an instant success and epitomized the spirit of London in the mid-60s: free, energetic, youthful, revolutionary, and unconventional (Diamond and Diamond 2006).

“The Lord of the Miniskirt” : André Courrèges

Quant probably deserves primary but not exclusive credit for the miniskirt. One French designer also caught the spirit of the era and did for France what Quant did for England (and America)—André Courrèges. Though he began to experiment with hemlines as early as 1961, Courrèges showcased his futuristic, space-age minimalistic dresses which scandalously fell above the knee in late 1964. Like Quant, Courrèges shocked the fashion world. Unlike Quant, he tended to design his skirts with more sophistication and maturity, which, in turn, helped make the miniskirt acceptable to French haute couture (Cawthorne 1999).

While Courrèges would later claim that he invented the miniskirt, Quant dismissed his claim, saying “It wasn’t me or Courrèges who invented the miniskirt anyway—it was the girls in the street who did it.” Though the debates between Quant and Courrèges can be amusing and many scholars tend to “skirt” the issue, both Quant and Courrèges appropriated the trends of earlier fashion houses and both took advantage of the greater social changes that were occurring around them. Regardless of who really “invented” the miniskirt, both Quant and Courrèges deserve credit for revolutionizing and enriching the fashion world with their daring hemlines (Diamond and Diamond 2006).

The Mini Goes International

Quant’s influential position in the heart of “Swinging London,” Courrèges’ influential position in the more sophisticated Parisian fashion world, and the mini’s easily washable fabric that busy teenage girls were apt to buy helped the miniskirt become a major international trend. The miniskirt’s international acceptance was also boosted when Jean Shrimpton, a popular model, unwittingly caused an international stir in late 1965 when she wore a miniskirt with no stockings, hat, or gloves at the Melbourne Cup Carnival in Australia (Steele 1997). The classic photo of that day showed a dramatic contrast: behind the young, carefree, and beautiful Shrimpton was a group of disapproving middle-aged women dressed in their very proper twin sets and pearls. Shrimpton’s apparent disregard for the bland status quo made a trend-setting fashion statement around the world (in non-communistic and non-Muslim countries, at least).

Accessorizing the Miniskirt

It wasn’t just moral outrage that followed the miniskirt, but also fashionable accessories. Accessories included zip-up knee high boots made of stretch vinyl (“kinky” or Courrèges’ “go-go” boots). Tights and pantyhose replaced awkward nylon stockings and became fashion statements in their own right. Actually, tights and pantyhose are what really made the miniskirt possible because they liberated the woman from garter belts and from trying to keep the lines on old-fashioned stockings straight (Olsen 1999).

By the late 1960s, miniskirts were being made of see-through fabrics and other loose crotchet materials—which, in turn, made underwear an important new accessory in fashion as well.

The “Lolita Look”

Ironically, the full sexuality of the miniskirt during the 1960s also played on a “school-girl” image, and London became recognized as catering almost exclusively to young girls between the ages of 15 and 20. The models on all the popular catwalks and fashion magazines were typically skinny and androgynous, with an almost prepubescent figure. Even Mary Quant’s husband and partner, Alexander Plunket-Greene, told Rolling Stone in 1987 that “at the time, there was a slightly sort of pedophile thing about it” (Cawthorne 1999). Indeed, the “Lolita look” was everywhere, and the fashionable woman of the 1950s, “all high-heeled and rock-hard tits,” was replaced by a London girl with a childish shape and a “great deal of long legs” (Cawthorne 1999).

The most famous model of the era was seventeen-year-old Twiggy (Leslie Hornby), who had a short boyish hairstyle, pale lips, and skinny figure (she was 5′ 7″ and weighed 99 pounds). Even though the miniskirt initially was an expression of individuality, women and girls alike copied Twiggy’s Vidal Sassoon geometric bob and her heavily mascaraed eyelashes in an attempt to achieve her “doe-eyed” little girl look. When young girls mimicked Twiggy’s fashionably gawky “broken limb” look, they were said to resemble little shop dolls or mannequins (White and Griffiths 2000). Not surprising, dieting fads and eating disorders skyrocketed during this decade (Lehnert 2000).

Decline of the Mini in the Late 1960s

The miniskirt of the “swinging 60s” lasted until the end of the decade. Throughout, fashion designers created some new and extreme variations in order to keep the excitement alive. For example, Paco Rabanne launched his plastic chain-mail miniskirt in 1966 and then the throw-away minidress. Despite this creativity, the mini eventually fell out of fashion when disillusionment about Vietnam became more widespread and the future looked less positive.

With increasingly political despondency, fashion became a little more nostalgic and hemlines fell back down to the ankle in 1969 in a style called the “maxi,” which was the longest hemline since 1914 (Cawthorne 1999). In addition, while the miniskirt initially was seen as liberating women, the development of terms such as “dolly birds” tended to objectify women, and feminists realized that the miniskirt had great potential to be more exploitive than liberating (Reilly 2003). With the feminist movement in full swing by the early 1970s, minis (whose hemlines had nowhere to go but down, anyway) fell into disfavor.

The Late 1970s Punk Revival of the Mini

While the miniskirt fell out of fashion in the early 1970s, the punk movement at the end of the decade helped revive the miniskirt, thanks in part to female rock stars such as Debbie Harry (Blondie) who were fond of wearing miniskirts on stage. The punks were motivated by anti-fashion and tried to avoid mainstream trends, which were considered bourgeois, bland, and over-indulgent.

Influenced by punk designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, whose shop SEX sold the fashion, the mini was reincarnated in black leather and PVC. The mini was also now often worn with ripped fishnet tights and took on a slightly “trashy” overtone that reflected the “whatever” attitude (Cawthorne 1999). In an ironic twist of fashion, once the punk look was picked up by designers, the punk movement’s anti-establishment edge became mainstream itself.

1980s and 1990s: The Corporate Miniskirt

The miniskirt was part of the power suit trend in the 1980s and early 1990s

The 1980s and early 1990s heralded a return to a more womanly figure in contrast to the adolescent androgyny of the 1960s. Rather than disappearing, however, the miniskirt was incorporated into the new, big-shouldered, “power” business suit for women, either in traditional pinstripes or jewel-colored wools (Cawthorne 1999). Popular characters in TV sitcoms such as Carrie in Sex in the City and Heather Locklear in Melrose Place helped the miniskirt appear sexy—and smart (Diamond and Diamond 2006).

Miniskirts were no longer considered appropriate only for teenagers, but they also became a power statement for sophisticated, long-legged, thirty-something career women who were in total control of their single life.

Mini Skirts around the World

For the most part, the miniskirt has been accepted in the Western world; however, not all countries and cultures embraced the short skirt. Inmany African countries, the miniskirt was seen not only as a corrupting influence of the West but alsoof the modern world.

For example, in Tanzania in 1968, at least one barmaid was stoned by a mob that supposedly disapproved of the shortness and tight fit of her miniskirt (Ross 2008), and politicians argued that the spread of AIDS would be halted if women would stop wearing miniskirts (“It’s in Our Hands”). And just this year, a strict Muslim father hired hitmen to kill his 21-year-old daughter because she refused to stop wearing miniskirts. After he paid the gangsters the equivalent of about $3,000, they kidnapped and shot her in the head on the outskirts of St. Petersburg, Russia (“Daughter Killed”).

Twenty-first Century Miniskirts

While the miniskirt has been met with disapproval and even violence, the tiny skirt shows no signs of disappearing. On the contrary, the miniskirt is still heavily featured on Western catwalks and in fashion magazines—and it is often shorter than ever. The phone company Samsung even introduced a new cell phone in 2008 called the “Miniskirt Season 2” which, while looking nothing like a miniskirt, is targeted toward women who like to “Talk, Play, Love” (Evans 2008). The miniskirt—variously known as the “micro-mini,” “pelmet,” or “bondage” skirt—continues to occupy a fascinating and paradoxical space in the fashion world as it teasingly attempts to cover and reveal at the same time. In all of its contradictions and reinventions, the miniskirt still provokes, challenges, and demands attention from both men and women alike.
