Katarzyna Lenart is a 23-year-old student seeking a seat on Poland’s parliament. And her campaign is rather enlightening, mostly because it includes her stripping in a video trumpeting her quest for election. Naturally, Polish politicos are displeased.

Violence doesn’t have a religion

Using violence based on religion is blatantly misleading; religion does not lead to violence but to love and peace instead. The suicide bomb that occurred in the Bethel Injil Sepenuh Church (GBIS) Surakarta, also known as Solo, Central Java, is not linked with one particular religion and the fatalities should be perceived as victims rather than as the believers of a certain religion. In my point of view, the problem should be located in the victim-perpetrator relationship without adding religion into it.

Religion, in one way or another, has nothing to do with violence. The main course of religion is peace-love. The history of religion is the peace-love narrative. The life narratives of the main figures in all religions have clearly shown the language of respect and peace. Despite the main message of religion, doctrinal interpretations have created the problems among and between religions. Since the interpretation is a human-made elucidation, the action that leads to violence is a personal responsibility.

In the context of the recent suicide bombing in Solo, the perpetrator has hidden behind the strict interpretation attached to the Jamaah Ansharut Tauhit (JAT). Yet, the action of killing other people is a particular matter, Islam is far from the actions of suicide bombers. The perpetrator was not a Muslim, it was Pino Damayanto or Ahmad Urip instead. Instead of associating the victims with religion, we should rather name them according to their names. The violence is not associated with any religion.

Moreover, the violence in Solo was not the act of a religious group. It’s not an Islamic act, rather a JAT action. Confining the violence to the individual believers can reject the evil idea of a clash of religions. Thanks are due to Muslim and Christian leaders who stand up and criticize the perpetration of suicide bombs as an unreligious act.

Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama, the biggest Islamic groups in Indonesia, have criticized the person who is responsible for the suicide bomb as wrongly interpreting Islam. Both groups have also asked the government to end terrorism in Indonesia as soon as possible. This is a strong signal that violence does not have a religion. Perpetrators are criminals regardless of religious background.

By locating violence on the empirical basis, we let the judicial mechanism work according to the principle of equality before the law. At this point, the violence done by Pino Damayanto is not a religious issue; it’s a “law enforcement” subject. As the problem is in the law enforcement area, the issue should be away from any political rumors and games.

As a matter of fact, putting the suicide bomb in the exclusive domain will keep it free from bias. As usual, the government expresses sympathy and blames the perpetrator publicly, but the real action to cut off the root of terrorism and violence might not be finished yet.

Unlike with counterterrorism in other countries, Indonesia seems to be playing games with violence and terror. The government is reluctant to fight against terror and violence. JAT has allegedly been involved in more than one suicide bomb and terrorist act, but it does not make any sense that the Indonesian intelligent organizations has failed to crack down on the group terror.

In the course of private and state actions, John Finnis says, “Public acts must be strictly impartial between the members of the public – and public-community here includes not only the state but also political parties, etc. Public acts must look to the general good, in the sense of the good of each, and there is no room, as there is in private morality”.

For Finnis, if a state does not take action against a blatantly personal action in public, the action could lead to a justification (John Finnis, 2011: 84). The bottom line in an Indonesian context is that the state, including the political parties, should take action against violence and terrorism, unless public will justifies the violence as virtuous conduct.

In fact, the justification of violence could create a wrong collective imagination on terror and violence. People will be haunted by the terrorism nightmare and the feeling of weakness. Vigorous action will send a message that the state is for everyone. Also, actions can craft a common vision of how people should live together in the state. Humans are imaginative beings. Therefore, imagination plays a pivotal role in bringing communities together into a state.

A state’s serious action against terrorism is the sermon to make violence a private matter. The bomb at the church in Solo was not violence against Christians rather it was against Indonesian State supremacy. The perpetrator is not a Muslim but a citizen who is committed to crime.

The heart of Indonesia is unity in diversity. Hence, the heart of Indonesia is under attack when a particular person launches violence toward others. For this reason, Indonesia and Bhinneka Tunggal Ika – Unity in Diversity – are two sides of one coin. One can not separate the principle from Indonesia.

A couple from Nice have been granted a divorce after 21 years of marriage on the grounds of an "absence of sexual relations for several years" which was judged to be "solely the fault of the husband."

The decision, which could cause concern to inattentive spouses across France, was accompanied by a payment of €10,000 ($14,000) in damages from the man to his former wife, according to newspaper Aujourd'hui.

The 51-year-old man, only known as Jean-Louis G., claimed that sex "simply became less frequent over time". He said he had health problems and was tired by his job.

The court of appeal in the southern town of Aix-en-Provence was not convinced by the man's excuses.

"Jean-Louis G. could not offer any justification for the health problems that made it impossible for him to have sexual relations with his wife," the court said.

Rightly or wrongly, most women are desperate for a smaller bum. Gym workouts, magic knickers and all sorts of diet tricks...we’ll try anything for a perfectly pert behind.

But Dionne Washington can’t imagine anything worse. Her massive bottom is 5ft 3ins across and weighs a whopping 22st – the same as three Victoria Beckhams or a baby panda. And it’s her greatest asset.

“I am literally sitting on a fortune,” says Dionne, 35. “My bum must be the widest in the world and it earns me over £90,000 a year. I used to hate it, but now it’s my fave feature.”

She knows how much her bottom weighs because four men lifted her up and flopped it down on a set of industrial scales while holding up the rest of her. At its widest point, it’s 14ft 9ins around, and she’s on a mission to make it even bigger.

Dionne’s total weight is 35st and at 5ft 4ins tall her Body Mass Index is 85. That’s four times more than an average woman and it puts her at risk of high cholesterol, diabetes and heart problems.

“I’m not concerned,” she insists. “I love my body and wouldn’t change a thing.”

Dionne says nearly everything she eats goes to her bottom and to maintain its huge size she consumes a shocking 9,000 calories a day – more than three times the recommended intake for women.

“The more I eat the bigger this beauty gets,” says Dionne.

She hasn’t always been so proud of her bum though. Growing up in Texas, USA, she says it was the bane of her life. A skinny child, her weight ballooned when she hit puberty.

“Suddenly I went from size 12 jeans to a size 18, then 20 then 22, while on top I remained a size 14. Kids at school can be so cruel, calling me Big Bum Bertha, Butt Head and Bottom Feeder. I’d sit at the back of class and wait until everyone else left the room because my bum often got stuck in the chair.

“I could barely run, so PE was a nightmare. I’d get mum to write notes saying I had cramps or sore knees. I tried wearing Spanx to contain my bottom but they didn’t work. I went to the prom by myself and left school feeling depressed, lacking confidence and hating my body,” she recalls.

Dionne tried endless diets, including drinking just diet shakes, the cabbage soup diet and WeightWatchers. But nothing worked.

“My mum Carol took me to see the doctor and he said I needed to diet and exercise more. Mum told me some of my cousins had big bottoms and perhaps it was genetic. All I did was hide under big dresses and comfort-eat.”

Studying business administration at a local college, Dionne was miserable. “I kept my head down and tried to make myself invisible but that was hard. I was still a virgin and felt I’d never find someone who liked me for being me,” she says.

But at 19 one of the guys from class asked her out.

“It was the first time anyone had shown real interest. The date was lovely and we ended up having sex. Then I discovered later he’d done it for a bet with the other guys in my class. I was devastated and lost even more confidence.”

Dionne started work at a law firm. “It was hard as my behind was getting wider as was my appetite. I couldn’t fit into the office chairs. I hated it.

“Then a doctor told me I could diet but the weight probably wouldn’t shift. I could have liposuction but it would take multiple surgeries then I’d need more to fix the hanging skin. It would cost more than £25,000.”

Earning just £14,000 a year, Dionne was devastated. “I tried to get new jobs but the prettier, smaller girls always beat me even though I was more qualified. I knew it was down to my size,” she says.

Then her second boyfriend, who she met in 2008, made her realise she should love her bottom. After the second date he admitted he was attracted to very large women.

“He was throwing all these phrases at me I didn’t understand. He explained he was a ‘fat admirer’ and loved large women and said that in his books I was a BBW – a Big, Beautiful Woman,” she says.

“That night he showed me forums on the internet dedicated to big girls. Some weighed up to 50st. There were super-sized girls in lingerie proudly flashing their flab. Suddenly my world changed. I’d discovered a place where women like me were not only accepted, but adored.”

She made friends with other big girls who were sure her wide bottom would be a hit. So in February 2008, she decided to take the plunge and post some pictures online.

“I weighed 30st and was sick of my boring life. I’d just come out of another failed relationship so I decided to take control,” she says.

“I had a girlfriend take some pictures of me and posted them on a forum. Within 48 hours I was inundated with emails from fans around the world wanting to know if they could buy my pictures.”

Dionne admits she was scared and thrilled at the same time.

“But I decided to go for it. I started selling pictures and videos of me and my bum online. I offered special membership rates of up to £20 a month and would send people two picture sets of up to 30 images. For extra they’d get a video and I charged even more for instant message chats.”

Dionne has built up her empire and now has more than 15,000 fans. Her bottom has paid for an apartment, a big car (with extra large seats), holidays, designer clothes and gifts for her friends.

However, having the world’s widest bum doesn’t come without its problems.

She can’t sit on normal chairs or stools – she takes up a two-seater sofa – so she does a lot of her computer work in bed. She has a supersized stool, but even with that her bottom sticks out 8ins at the back and 9ins each side.

Dionne also requires extra-wide changing rooms in shops.

“Sometimes I can’t try on clothes as I literally can’t fit,” she says. “I need toilets with seats for big people and I get stuck in bath tubs. I get a lot of clothes made to order in size 36-40, especially my knickers,” she says.

“I hate shopping in supermarket aisles that have cans and displays sticking out as I end up knocking them over. At restaurants I have to sit in a booth for three people and push the table to the other side. I don’t use buses – I have to turn sideways just to get through the door.”

She has a serious fear of getting stuck in the toilet on a train or plane.

“One time I got stuck and the air hostess had to pull me out. I laugh now but it makes you realise the seats need to be bigger for us large girls.”

Dionne’s parents are both dead but she has an aunt who thinks she is nuts. On the other hand, her friends are very supportive. “They tell me I’m amazing and a real inspiration,” she says.

Dionne admits she suffers from back pain but claims it’s minimal because the heavier she gets, her body will change to handle the extra pounds.

“I am a Jimmy Choo fan but I can’t wear heels. My doctor said my butt wouldn’t allow me to balance properly and sometimes after a long day I lose a little sensation in my feet,” she says.

She gets endless marriage proposals from fans but turns them all down.

“I have joined a few dating sites and hope to find a guy who likes me for my brains who I can marry and have kids with.

“I’ve had some eggs frozen in case I meet Mr Perfect later in life so I can still have a baby.”

For now, the woman with the world’s widest butt, has no plans to stop modelling or change her lifestyle. “I earn tens of thousands, I have thousands of fans and those kids at college who teased me are all in dead-end jobs.

She says: “I never ask people if my butt looks big in this. I ask them if it’s big enough... the bigger the better.”

Those behind the masks have been demonized by some as opportunistic criminals from ghettoized communities dependent on welfare handouts.

London Mayor Boris Johnson said those involved were guilty of "wanton criminality" for which there was no justification. Right wing newspaper columns have blamed youngsters "who believe there is no need to work."

But academics and community leaders say the identities of those who have taken to the streets and their reasons for doing so are far more complex -- representing a tinderbox of economic and social tensions whose explosion was almost inevitable.

On the third night of violence across London, as police in riot gear fended off hails of missiles in streets filled with smoke from burning cars, it was clear their adversaries hailed from different backgrounds -- young and old, black and white.

Likewise, in retail parks where looters forced open the chain store security gates and helped themselves to flat screen televisions and sporting goods, both men and women could be seen running away with bags of stolen goods.

Says Paul Bagguley, a sociologist from the University of Leeds, while the identities of those involved may vary, different types of disorder tends to attract different social groups -- patterns he says matches previous uprisings in Britain.

"In terms of direct conflict with the police, it is mostly young men, but in terms of looting, it's more mixed -- young men and young women involved," he said.

Bagguley said, however, that those involved share low-income backgrounds, suggesting that while the violence may have been triggered by anger over a fatal police shooting last week, the long-term impact of the global economic downturn has helped fan the flames.

"I strongly suspect that it's people who are unemployed or on very low income who are involved in this. People are constantly bombarded with advertising and they see these shops full of goods they can't afford and would like to buy and are being encouraged to buy, there's a lot of that going on."

And, says University of Bedfordshire criminologist John Pitts, recent government youth service cutbacks and job losses in the public sector, a key employer in some of riot-hit areas, has exacerbated the situation.

"I think there's a mounting sense of discontent in those neighborhoods, which doesn't excuse it, but does go some way to explaining the animosity."

While many of those involved may be from low income households, Bagguley said it is too simplistic to class perpetrators as products of a benefits culture, an allegation often leveled by right wing commentators in Britain.

Community leaders instead blame a sense of disenfranchisement felt by young people living in cities like London where disparities between rich and poor leave many feeling resentment towards authorities that fail to address their problems.

"Although produced by our consumerist culture, they have no stake or identification with this society, no interests and thus nothing to lose," says Symeon Brown, an activist and social commentator from Tottenham in London, where riots first took place on Saturday.

Lee Jasper, a prominent community leader in London agreed, saying it was wrong to categorize looters and rioters as criminals without taking into account simmering resentments -- not just about last week's shootings, but other perceived police wrongdoings.

"There is a tremendous anxiety, anger and demand for justice and that has triggered legitimate demonstrations," he said.

"You can dismiss them all as thugs, but if people think the solution to the problems we're seeing today is simply locking up thousands of people, I think they're mistaken.

"There are underlying causes which means that people in inner cities, who feel alienated and disconnected from wider society, don't have a stake in it and therefore see no reason to adopt its moral values."

This, says Bagguley, is compounded by the lack of alternatives for people whose lives are not defined by employment or family commitments -- perhaps due to their youth (and even, in some cases, because schools are now out for the summer).

"I think what's been happening is there are a lot of young people who are available and unoccupied, so it's not so much their sense of grievance about their situation, but that there's nothing else for them to do."

Cathay Pacific airline said Saturday it is investigating photographs that appear to show one of its stewardesses giving oral sex to a pilot in the cockpit of an aircraft, a report said.

The existence of the photos was first reported in Chinese blogs on Saturday. Industry sources said they suspected the photos were a malicious stunt designed to hurt the company.

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) confirmed that the Hong Kong-based airline had launched a "full investigation" into the cockpit sex allegations.

The paper reported that a video was also rumored to have been posted online, but it was not clear where the sex act had taken place nor if any airline staff were involved.

"One of the photos appears to have been taken inside an aircraft cockpit," an airline spokesman said, according to Deutsche Presse-Agentur quoting the SCMP.

"There is no way to tell conclusively whether the photo was taken while the aircraft was on the ground or airborne."

The woman in the photograph was wearing what appeared to be a Cathay Pacific stewardess uniform but her identify had yet to be confirmed, the spokesman said. The male was "not identifiable as the face is not shown."

"There is no evidence whatsoever that he is a pilot on duty. His clothing does not appear to be a Cathay Pacific pilot uniform,' the spokesman said.

The airline said it had more than 8,000 cabin crew, mostly based in Hong Kong.

Cathay Pacific Flight Attendants Union former chief Becky Kwan Siu-wa said she believed the photos were fakes.

"It is just someone trying to be malicious who has sent these photographs around out of spite," she said.

"These photographs could have been taken anywhere and people can dress up to look like a flight attendant.

"So lately my wife has been working alot of late shifts, and for the past couple of months she has been carpooling with a male co-worker. At first I didnt mind in case she has car trouble or something like that, but it seems they have become a little bit more than friends.

Woman has gigantic snake growing inside her

A woman from Pakistan is appealing to authorities to assist her in getting surgery to remove a massive snake which is growing inside her abdomen.

According to Pakistani press 50-year-old Rasheedan Bibi from Saggar, north of Lahore, accidentally swallowed a small snake which was in her drinking water several months ago.

However after a few weeks Rasheedan began to expand, and she believed she was simply pregnant. But Rasheedan continued to grow and grow, and became very ill. After seven months of swelling up Rasheedan eventually sought medical help and went to a hospital.

According to Rasheedan the hospital staff used ultrasound to see what was growing inside her and it revealed a gigantic snake coiled around her innards.

Indian dad of two Ryalu has hysterectomy after doctors find uterus

An Indian man was admitted to a hospital near Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, after complaining of severe stomach pains. When doctors, who suspected a normal hernia, carried out an exploratory operation, they discovered the pains had been caused by a female uterus, ovaries, Fallopian tubes, a cervix and underdeveloped vaginal tissue.

The 35-year-old man, identified as Ryalu, had not suffered any problems until the stomach pains that led him to the hospital.

Dr Pramod Kumar Shrivastava, a surgeon at the Chhindwara district hospital told the Telegraph that the patient had external male organs and was a fit man working in the fields and living a normal life.

"Usually the contents of the Hernia Sac are abdomen organs like large intestines and small intestines, but when we operated on the patient we were surprised to find female reproductive organs. We have removed the organs through a hysterectomy and repaired the hernia.

"The sac contained quite developed uterus, both the ovaries, Fallopian tubes, cervix and a tissue which is undeveloped but apparently looks like vaginal tissue," Shrivastava explained.

The patient, a father of two, is said to have been as stunned as the doctors.

"The external reproductive organs of the patient were masculine and he has no problems whatsoever with his sexuality. He had functional male genitals and there was no formation of breasts in the patient. It's an embryological accident at the time of embryonic formation," Shrivastava added.

Joseph Schexnider's Body Found in Chimney 27 Years After Disappearing

A wild story out of Louisiana, where the body of a man was found inside a chimney -- 27 years after he disappeared. And, adding to the strangeness, his family never reported him as missing.

According to the Daily Mail, the story began in 1984 when 22-year-old Joseph Schexnider missed a court appearance on charges of possessing a stolen vehicle. Police showed up at his house in the town of Abbeville to arrest him. He ran off, and that was the last anyone ever saw of him.

His family never reported him missing because they said it was not uncommon for him to leave town without notice. However, police believe they never made a report because they knew he was a wanted man.

It turns out Schexnider was in town the entire time. In May workers renovating the local bank found a skeleton inside a chimney. It took a couple of months, but the remains have been identified as Schexnider's.

Police believe Schexnider died of dehydration after getting stuck, possibly while breaking into the bank to rob it.

"We've not ever recovered one from a chimney before, that's a little unusual, so this was the first type of recovery like that that we've ever done before," Mary Manhein, Director of the LSU Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services Lab, told KATC-TV.

"Hopefully this will give the family some closure. There's no signs of foul play in this investigation, so as of now it's going to be a closed case," said Abbeville Police Detective Lt. David Hardy. True Stories of a Cheating Wife

I work with a lady who has had several affairs with various men. She's awful. She doesn't tell me. I hear it from her best friend. I know her husband and he's not the cheating kind at all. They have 3 kids. What kills me is that she thinks it's funny he is so clueless. He is. Some of the people she has slept with are his own friends. No...I'm not one of them. I think if he ever finds out it will hurt him to find out what a fraud she really is. And I'm sure she will cry and maybe even blame him for it.

My wife had an affair that lasted 3 months. By the third month she had slept with her lover more than 10 times. She confessed after I confronted her with information I had gathered from her lover. I was devastated but the first thought that came to my mind was forgiveness. I loved her deeply. However, the pain never went away and have stayed with me since. I had decided to give the marriage a second chance and she had since then tried her best to repent her ways and mend the relationship.

But a year has passed and not a day goes by without memories of the relationship comes to hurt and grieves me. I have tried to erase all thoughts but to this day, I fail to forget. Some days are OK but some days it gets pretty bad. I have managed to hide my pain after hearing her confessions. Then I went into the phone logs online and found out she and this guy were calling each other on a regular basis, even after I thought the online stuff was over. I confronted her about this and she put up attitude like it was wrong for me to snoop. If it was "only fantasy" then why was she calling him? What a stinking liar. I thought we cleared this up again but then I found out she called him the minute we got back from vacation. The online stuff was never over either.

I installed internet monitoring software on our computer and found the e-mails were still going back and forth, even after I thought this was all in the past and we had been getting along. To me that was it. I left. I was devastated and humiliated and afraid of the future. I'd be divorced and alone. Away from my kids. The kids would be devastated. Going through the divorce process. Explaining it once it became public. We are now in counseling and but I am indifferent to her. I don't trust her. I wish I had never met her. A liar that treated me like nothing. If we never had kids I would be gone. Don't be foolish and try to win over your spouse. Don't think that loving your spouse will make them love you. Don't give yourself to someone who doesn't give back, the disappointment will be ten times worse.

So I forwarded the email to everyone in her address book; her mom & dad, her boss, all her coworkers, aunts & uncles & cousins. She started staying up late playing the game all the time. Most times until 2-3am and get up for work by 6am. I was concerned and curious. My wife and some other guy had made a home with each other and expressed there true love for one another in the profiles. I asked my wife what is going on he said "its only a game". I told her that the comments made me feel more than a little uncomfortable. It was around this time that she started telling me I was "always up her butt" and "she needs time to herself to play". She would get very upset if I was to visit her Simulated house. It was around this time that she also told me that she didn't she was in love with me anymore. MY HEART NEARLY STOPPED. I was assured of this when I checked her cell phone messages. There is not much more that hurts then to hear "I love you" on a message to your wife form someone else. Murder victim' returns home after 10 years

Zhao Qingxi, the vice party secretary of the village, also confirmed with China Daily that Zhao Zhenxiang had indeed returned home.

"They (the police) are also inquiring into the case that happened 10 years ago," he said.

Li Zhongyuan, the village's party chief, said Zhao ran away 10 years ago because he was scared after assaulting Zhao Zuohai with a knife in the fight.

Local police officials refused to comment on Friday.

Yu Fangxin, Zhao Zuohai's brother-in-law, said he was requested by "someone from high above" not to talk to the media.

"An investigation team from Beijing has arrived in the village. I was told that my brother-in-law will be released from the prison within a week," Yu said.

He said his brother-in-law will be faced with a broken family, because his ex-wife has remarried and took away two of their four children. The other two were adopted by other families.

The case echoes a far-reaching one in 1998 in which then 32-year-old She Xianglin was sentenced to 15 years in prison for allegedly murdering his wife.

Three months later, a body found in a local pond was identified as Zhang by her relatives. She, under high suspicion, was arrested in late April 1994.

Viktor Jasinski, 32, had gone to the salon with the intention of robbing it.

Victor first went to the hospital to treat his swollen testicles and then to the police where he explained he had been held hostage in a back room at the hairdressers, chained up naked with pink fluffy handcuffs to a radiator - and fed nothing but Viagra.

When police arrived to question Olga, she said: "What a b******. Yes, we had sex a couple of times. But I bought him new jeans, gave him food and even gave him 1,000 roubles (around 30 GBP) when he left."

Bruce Lee (27 November 1940 – 20 July 1973) was born in San Francisco, California, and raised in Hong Kong until his late teens. His Hong Kong and Hollywood-produced films elevated the traditional Hong Kong martial arts film to a new level of popularity and acclaim, and sparked the first major surge of interest in Chinese martial arts in the West.

The direction and tone of his films changed and influenced martial arts and martial arts films in Hong Kong and the rest of the world as well. Lee became an iconic figure particularly to the Chinese, as he portrayed Chinese national pride and Chinese nationalism in his movies. He primarily practiced Chinese martial arts (Kung fu), particularly Wing Chun.

On 20 July 1973, Lee was in Hong Kong, due to have dinner with former James Bond star George Lazenby, with whom he intended to make a film. According to Lee's wife Linda, Lee met producer Raymond Chow at 2 p.m. at home to discuss the making of the movie Game of Death. They worked until 4 p.m. and then drove together to the home of Lee's colleague Betty Ting, a Taiwanese actress. The three went over the script at Ting's home, and then Chow left to attend a dinner meeting.

A short time later, Lee complained of a headache, and Ting gave him an analgesic (painkiller), Equagesic, which contained both aspirin and a muscle relaxant. Around 7:30 p.m., he went to lie down for a nap. After Lee did not turn up for dinner, Chow came to the apartment but could not wake Lee up. A doctor was summoned, who spent ten minutes attempting to revive him before sending him by ambulance to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. However, Lee was dead by the time he reached the hospital.

There was no visible external injury; however, his brain had swollen considerably, from 1,400 to 1,575 grams (a 13% increase). Lee was 32 years old. The only two substances found during the autopsy were Equagesic and trace amounts of cannabis. On 15 October 2005, Chow stated in an interview that Lee died from a hypersensitivity to the muscle relaxant in Equagesic, which he described as a common ingredient in painkillers.

When the doctors announced Lee's death officially, it was ruled a "death by misadventure." Dr. Langford, who treated Lee for his first collapse, stated after his death that, "There's not a question in my mind that cannabis should have been named as the presumptive cause of death.

"He also believed that, "Equagesic was not at all involved in Bruce's first collapse."Professor R.D. Teare, who had overseen over 100,000 autopsies, was the top expert assigned to the Lee case. Dr. Teare declared that the presence of cannabis was mere coincidence, and added that it would be "irresponsible and irrational" to say that it might have triggered Lee's death.

His conclusion was that the death was caused by an acute cerebral edema due to a reaction to compounds present in the prescription pain killing drug Equagesic. Another doctor, Peter Wu's preliminary opinion was that the cause of death could have been a reaction to cannabis and Equagesic.

Dr. Wu would later back off from this position however: "Professor Teare was a forensic scientist recommended by Scotland Yard; he was brought in as an expert on cannabis and we can't contradict his testimony. The dosage of cannabis is neither precise nor predictable, but I've never known of anyone dying simply from taking it."

The exact details of Lee's death are a subject of controversy. But long before his sudden and tragic death at the age of thirty-two, rumors were rife throughout Asia that he had been dead for months. According to one source, Hong Kong Triads had killed Lee because he had refused to pay them protection money. Another claimed that he had been drugged by a former sensei who resented the fact that he taught martial arts to foreigners.

Seven deminers who were kidnapped in western Afghanistan the kidnappers beheaded them, police said on Sunday (10/07/2011), while NATO announced the deaths of three soldiers due to Taliban attacks.

The seven men were members of 28 deminers who were kidnapped on Wednesday (06/07/2011) in a district so the Taliban insurgency in the central province of Farah. Until now no one had claimed responsibility for mass kidnappings.

“Seven deminers were beheaded. We found one dead body of their dead bodies and the rest were tribal leaders,” said Mohammad Chaws Malyar, deputy head of the Farah provincial police.

Heidemarie Schwermer, a 69-year-old woman from Germany, gave up using money 15 years ago and says she’s been much happier ever since.

Heidemarie’s incredible story began 22 years ago, when she, a middle-aged secondary school teacher emerging from a difficult marriage, took her two children and moved to the city of Dortmund, in Germany’s Ruhr area. One of the first things she noticed was the large number of homeless people, and this shocked her so much that she decided to actually do something about it. She had always believed the homeless didn’t need actual money to be accepted back into society, only a chance to empower themselves by making themselves useful, so she opened a Tauschring (swap shop), called “Gib und Nimm” (Give and Take).

Her small venture was a place where anyone could trade stuff and skills for other things and skills they needed, without a single coin or banknote changing hands. Old clothes could be traded in return for kitchen appliances, and car service rendered in return for plumbing services, and so on. The idea didn’t really attract many of Dortmund’s homeless, because, as some of them told her to her face, they didn’t feel an educated middle-class woman could relate to their situation. Instead, her small shop was assaulted by many of the city’s unemployed and retired folk eager to trade their skills and old stuff for something they needed. Heidemarie Schwermer’s Tauschring eventually became somewhat of a phenomenon in Dortmund and even prompted its creator to ask herself some questions about the life she was living.

She started to realize she was living with a lot of stuff she didn’t really need and initially decided not to buy anything else without giving something away. Then she realized how unhappy she was with her work and made the connection between this feeling and the physical symptoms (backache and constant illness) she was feeling, so she decided to take up other jobs. She began washing dishes for 10 Deutchmarks an hour, and despite many were telling her things like “You went to university, you studied to do this?”, she felt good about herself, and didn’t feel like she should be valued more because of her studies than someone working in a kitchen. By 1995, the Tauschring had changed her life so much that she was spending virtually nothing, as everything she needed seemed to find its way into her life.

So in 1996. she took the biggest decision of her life: to live without money. Her children had moved out so she sold the apartment in Dortmund and decided to live nomadically, trading things and services for everything she needed. It was supposed to be a 12-month experiment, but found herself loving it so much that she just couldn’t give it up. 15 years later, she still lives according to the principles of Gib und Nimm, doing various chores for accommodation in the houses of various members of the Tauschring, and loving every minute of it. Schwermer has written two books about her experience of living without money and asked her publisher to give the money to charity so it can make many people happy instead of just one. She’s just happy being healthier and better off than ever before.

All of her belongings fit into a single-back suitcase and a rucksack, she has emergency savings of €200 and any other money she comes across, she gives away. A shooting in Brooklyn claimed the life of rapper Nicki Minaj’s cousin early Monday.

The Post reported that Nicholas Telemaque, 27, was shot just five blocks from his home on East 52nd Street and Farragut Road at 2:40 a.m. in East Flatbush.

Minaj, who has exploded onto the music scene with hits such as “Moment 4 Life” and “Super Bass,” took to Twitter to pay tribute to her slain cousin.

Cops were called and found Telemaque with gunshot wounds to his upper torso. He was rushed to Kings County Hospital, where he later died.

Kerry Howley, a creative art student, from Cambridge, England, is creating quite a buzz in the art world, with her collection of delicate necklaces made from human hair.

The idea of creating jewelry from human hair was inspired by people’s aversion to cut hair. Hair is usually regarded as a very important part of the human body and is worn with pride, but once its connection to the body has been severed, it’s viewed as slightly disgusting. Through her art, the young Middlesex student “hoped to create a delicate balance between the viewer/wearer’s feelings of aversion and attraction.” She wanted to see if she could make cut hair attractive again.

The main material for Howley’s masterpieces was provided by one of her mother’s friends, a Japanese woman with hair down to her waist. She only cuts it once every five years, and when she had 30 cm cut off the bottom, she gave it all to Kerry. The 23-year-old art student used broken saw blades to cut and weave the strands of hair into abstract shapes inspired by wallpaper patterns, and spent over 60 hours working on each of the five hair necklaces she has created so far.

248 women report being raped by soldiers in DR Congo in June

Some 248 women said they were raped by soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Sud-Kivu province last month, local medical reports showed Monday, in a region the UN has called the world's "rape capital."

A hospital doctor in Nakiele told AFP that 121 local women reported being the victim of rape on the night of June 11 to 12.

The previous night 55 women reported being violated in nearby Abala, a nurse said, while another health worker said 72 women in the village of Kanguli said they were also raped that night.

Nakiele village chief Losema Etamo Ngoma told AFP that the rapes and looting were committed by at least 150 armed men under the command of national army colonel Nyiragire Kulimushi, also known as "Kifaru".

The soldiers arrived in groups from 11:00 am (09H00 GMT) on June 11, he said, and were told by Kulimushi to find something to eat.

"At about 8:00 pm I heard women's cries everywhere. I asked to meet the colonel but an officer told me I couldn't so I returned home," he said.

"They left the village in the morning at about 5:00 am. I went around the houses and I met women in tears," he said.

The village chief said they told him: "The soldiers raped us."

A 28-year-old mother of two told AFP how two soldiers demanded she open her door before threatening to kill her and then raping her.

"After they left I began being sick," she said.

Kulimushi, who fled a military base south of Nakiele on June 8, is a former member of the Mai Mai tribal militia which integrated into the national army in 2009 following a peace agreement with Kinshasa.

The base at Kanada was created recently following a restructuring of operational forces in the west of the DR Congo, with regiments formed from different militia groups.

Kulimushi, who was until then in charge of a zone in the Fizi area, refused to see his officers excluded from the commanding ranks in the new set-up, according to a military source who did not want to be named.

Following the attacks government spokesman Lambert Mende said forces were actively looking for Kulimushi and that a special tribunal would be set up to look into the case.

The United Nations, rights groups and foreign governments have long complained about impunity for heinous crimes committed by soldiers in DR Congo.

In February, a judge in New Zealand made a young girl a ward of court so she could change her name from Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.

Other banned names include Sex Fruit, Keenan Got Lucy and Yeah Detroit.

Research in Papua and Papua New Guinea in the period 1998-2008 found 43 species of reptiles, composed of five species of snakes, 37 species of lizards, and a soft shelled turtle species. Detailed data on types of reptiles that are found published in the WWF report, published this year.

Among the types of snakes are found, attracted the most attention is a species of Typhlops hades. Unlike other known dangerous snake, the snake is as full of flaws. This type of snake is blind and has scales that cover his eyes. Typhlops hades also do not have can and can not even bite. Another feature is only 12-14 cm in length. Seeing the character, perhaps no one is afraid of snakes.

Typhlops hades was found by Fred Kraus from the Bishop museum in 2005. The findings published in the Journal of Herpetology Vol 39 No 4 of 2005. In the journal, Kraus said that this snake has 18 rows of scales, 343 middorsal scales, pupil a unique, single subocular scales and did not have scales presubocular.

Kraus is also expressed in the journal that this snake species described from two specimens found in the northeastern island of Rossel. Another unique type of snake that was found was Tropidonophis dolasii which has a yellow brown color with a distinctive style. Also there is a unique sea snakes have a habit of going to the mainland when they wanted to breed and lay eggs.

In addition to snakes, reptile found most amazing is the gold-spotted tree monitor lizard of Waigeo Island, Papua. Types of lizards that have a distinctive tail that it supports to live in trees. Species named Varanus boehmei it is known to prey on insects such as crickets and roaches and rodents such as mice.

Another type of reptile Varanus Island Misol reisingeri of which have striking colors and the Varanus Island Batanta macraei of which have black and turqoise and blue spots. Varanus types macraei is one of the most spectacular species of reptiles ever discovered.

I describe a new species of blindsnake of the genus Typhlops from Rossel Island, off the southeastern tip of New Guinea. The new species is a member of the Typhlops ater species group and is characterized by having 18 scale rows, 343 middorsal scales, T-V supralabial-imbrication pattern, a distinct pupil, single subocular scale, and by lacking a presubocular scale. Its closest living relative is probably Typhlops inornatus, known from forested habitats on the nearby mainland of New Guinea. The new species is known from only two specimens from northeastern Rossel Island, and it remains uncertain whether it occurs on adjacent islands of the Louisiade Archipelago

So have you heard about Asian Carp? Probably not, thinking about it. Hmm. So just in case you haven't been reading up on invasive oriental fish recently, it turns out they possess a pretty impressive ability – the ability to leap about, around, and over boats when they pass them... and it's pretty damn weird.

Just take a look at this YouTube video we have for you here, which shows a family chugging along in a boat down the Spoon river, Illinois, when suddenly nearly 70 fish start leaping out of the water and flapping in the faces of the kids on board.

It's truly a jaw-dropping spectacle, and one that begs the question... why? Why on earth do they do this? It seems the reason why is simply because they're scared of boats, and this is how they react.

As for why there are so many of the things in the water, it seems that that is down to the fact Asian Carp are an imported breed of fish – and one that breeds and breeds and breeds and, well, blows the other fish out of the water.

In other words, it's a bit of an ecological nightmare we're witnessing here. One that makes compulsive YouTube content, sure, but one that's still a little bit worrying...

When considering the advances associated with today’s modern visual effects technology, not to mention the draw of potentially instant Internet fame and ease of access, it’s becoming increasingly more difficult to get excited about UFO sightings.

Still, the following display that reportedly illuminated the skies above London earlier this month is certainly worth watching at least once—before then dismissing it as just another slick piece of sensationalist click-baiting.

Posted to clip-sharing service YouTube (of course) by user ‘alymc01’, the following video reveals a number of unidentified objects whizzing through the clouds high above the home of BBC Radio 1 on a beautiful June day.

“Right—took over a week to get it… but finally managed to get these critters on camera on a clear day, and even get a close-up,” the video’s accompanying explanation outlines. “It seems to be attracting quite a crowd now when they appear. Can anyone explain when on earth these lights are please.”

The clip also shows a small gathering of people watching a much larger (or closer) disc-shaped object that seems to dip and dive closer to the camera a couple of times before accelerating from view. It’s all very impressive.

Suitably sceptical yet? If not, it may be worth noting that the footage was captured in close proximity to The Mill and Framestore, two of the world’s leading special effects houses for the movie industry.

A History of the Miniskirt

The 1960s was a politically charged decade of revolution and change. Apollo 11 became the first capsule to land on the moon, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 became law, Vietnam was raging, Beatlemania was sweeping the world, birth control pills hit the market, and a new cult of youth, known as “Youthquake,” had radically taken over many areas of life. In the midst of these dramatic political and cultural changes emerged one of the most enduring and controversial icons of the era: the miniskirt (or mini skirt).

Existing, surprisingly, since ancient times, this small and sexy piece of fabric has embodied some of the most fascinating paradoxes of our times as it suggests both empowerment and vulnerability, independence and a desire to please, an attempt to cover and to reveal, maturity and playfulness, and liberation and exploitation. Simultaneously condemned and loved, the miniskirt exploded into the political landscape and had women (and men) suddenly paying attention to what had been hidden years before—a woman’s legs.

In the Beginning Was . . . the Miniskirt

High in the mountains in some of Europe’s oldest villages, archaeologists have recently unearthed ancient figurines dating between 5400-4700 B.C. What is remarkable about the figurines is not only their age, but also that the female figurines appear to be beautifully dressed in miniskirts not unlike the fashionable miniskirts of the 1960s, prompting some scholars to speculate that miniskirts were common in the earliest of civilizations (Derbyshire 2007). Interestingly, these figurines are not the only evidence of “ancient miniskirts. For example, an ancient Egyptian fresco shows a female acrobatic dancer wearing a “mini skirt” seemingly made out of cotton that shows off both her hips and her legs (Gandolfi 1989).

Early Twentieth-Century Skirts and Sowing the Seeds of Change

While the miniskirt may have existed as long as civilization has, it is probably only recently that it has evoked powerful political and cultural implications. In the mid 1800s, women in Europe and America were generally believed to be the weaker and more vulnerable sex. Politics, business, and physical activity could be dangerous for women, and tight corsets with long, restrictive skirts generally reflected these beliefs (Weaver 2003).

After WWI, however, advances in women's emancipation and post-war escapism led to the “flapper” style, an androgynous style with hemlines up to a woman’s knee. After dropping to a more sober calf length during the early 1930s, hemlines rose to just below the knee during WWII, partly due to mandatory fabric rationing during the war (Lehnert 2000).

After the end of wartime restrictions on cloth, women were ready for elegance and femininity, and the fashion industry promoted the “New Look” epitomized by Christian Dior. The New Look was mature and sophisticated, with an exaggerated hourglass figure and long, lavish hemlines (Steele 1997). While the New Look reflected the “best years of our life” consumerism that followed WWII, the “teddy boys” and beatniks of the Beat generation were already sowing the seeds of discontent in 1950s materialism—a discontent that would find its full voice in the 1960s and dramatically change hemlines forever (Reilly 2003).

The 1960s and the Politics of the Miniskirt

Teenagers Create Their Own Political (and Fashion) Space

Before the 1960s, young women had been expected to dress in the style of their mothers, which was usually loosely based on Parisian couture. For example, as late as 1962, a Sears catalog portrayed mothers and daughters as “patchwork pals” who were overjoyed that they are wearing identical dresses. Looking back on the late 1950s, the English designer Sally Tuffin remarked, “There weren’t any clothes for young people at all. One just looked like their mother” (Steele 1997).

However, by the 1960s, youth protests and demands for individual expression revealed that young adults were gaining a self-conscious awareness of themselves as a distinct and unified group that was able to respond to political events in ways that were different from their parents (Cawthorne 1999). Youngsters felt they no longer needed to follow the rules of bourgeois morality and manners, which they saw as hypocritical and based on double standards. As this young political entity gained a voice, they created a space for a new and distinctive fashion that embodied their own political views—not their parents’.

The Miniskirt as an Expression and Tool of 1960s Feminism

Growing awareness of feminism also paved the way for a different fashion for women. For example, in 1963, American Betty Friedman published The Feminine Mystique which deconstructed the myth of the happy housewife and expressed the desire of women to explore other roles. In addition, the 1960s saw a dramatic increase in women attending universities and entering the workforce, especially with the advent of the “temp agency” which allowed greater flexibility in when and where a woman wanted to work.

This decade also saw laws passed that helped protect and empower both married and divorced women (Diamond and Diamond 2006). Perhaps most important was the advent of the birth control pill, which removed fears of pregnancy and helped usher in the sexual revolution (Cawthorne 1999). The image of a woman was beginning to dramatically shift from being a wife and mother to a young, single, carefree girl proud of her sexuality and confident with her power. The miniskirt would express—and serve as a tool for—this growing woman’s movement.

A New Class of Young Consumerism

The young generation was indeed growing up rebellious and articulate—and with more money than they’ve ever had before. Young people suddenly became a powerful class of consumers who demanded a fashion that matched the spirit of youth. Consequently, the whole structure of the fashion system was challenged from the youth in the streets as the prestige of “couture” came under attack or, worse, seemed irrelevant (Cawthorne 1999). Upstart designers and boutiques began to cater to a new youth market that could now buy what they wanted—and to older women who began to scramble to look like their daughters.

“The Mother of the Miniskirt” : Mary Quant

When a young upstart British designer named Mary Quant opened her boutique Bazaar in 1955 on King’s Road (a mod and rocker hangout), she was poised to spearhead a fashion revolution. Without any real training in fashion, but with a finger on the pulse of everyday fashion of the street, she represented a distinctive breakaway in fashion. She began to sell clothes that reflected the ideas of the day’s youth and that had nothing to do with established Paris fashion houses (Lehnert 2000).

When she raised the hemline of her skirts in 1965 to several inches above the knee, the iconic miniskirt was born. Named after her favorite car, the Mini, the miniskirt was an instant success and epitomized the spirit of London in the mid-60s: free, energetic, youthful, revolutionary, and unconventional (Diamond and Diamond 2006).

“The Lord of the Miniskirt” : André Courrèges

Quant probably deserves primary but not exclusive credit for the miniskirt. One French designer also caught the spirit of the era and did for France what Quant did for England (and America)—André Courrèges. Though he began to experiment with hemlines as early as 1961, Courrèges showcased his futuristic, space-age minimalistic dresses which scandalously fell above the knee in late 1964. Like Quant, Courrèges shocked the fashion world. Unlike Quant, he tended to design his skirts with more sophistication and maturity, which, in turn, helped make the miniskirt acceptable to French haute couture (Cawthorne 1999).

While Courrèges would later claim that he invented the miniskirt, Quant dismissed his claim, saying “It wasn’t me or Courrèges who invented the miniskirt anyway—it was the girls in the street who did it.” Though the debates between Quant and Courrèges can be amusing and many scholars tend to “skirt” the issue, both Quant and Courrèges appropriated the trends of earlier fashion houses and both took advantage of the greater social changes that were occurring around them. Regardless of who really “invented” the miniskirt, both Quant and Courrèges deserve credit for revolutionizing and enriching the fashion world with their daring hemlines (Diamond and Diamond 2006).

The Mini Goes International

Quant’s influential position in the heart of “Swinging London,” Courrèges’ influential position in the more sophisticated Parisian fashion world, and the mini’s easily washable fabric that busy teenage girls were apt to buy helped the miniskirt become a major international trend. The miniskirt’s international acceptance was also boosted when Jean Shrimpton, a popular model, unwittingly caused an international stir in late 1965 when she wore a miniskirt with no stockings, hat, or gloves at the Melbourne Cup Carnival in Australia (Steele 1997). The classic photo of that day showed a dramatic contrast: behind the young, carefree, and beautiful Shrimpton was a group of disapproving middle-aged women dressed in their very proper twin sets and pearls. Shrimpton’s apparent disregard for the bland status quo made a trend-setting fashion statement around the world (in non-communistic and non-Muslim countries, at least).

Accessorizing the Miniskirt

It wasn’t just moral outrage that followed the miniskirt, but also fashionable accessories. Accessories included zip-up knee high boots made of stretch vinyl (“kinky” or Courrèges’ “go-go” boots). Tights and pantyhose replaced awkward nylon stockings and became fashion statements in their own right. Actually, tights and pantyhose are what really made the miniskirt possible because they liberated the woman from garter belts and from trying to keep the lines on old-fashioned stockings straight (Olsen 1999).

By the late 1960s, miniskirts were being made of see-through fabrics and other loose crotchet materials—which, in turn, made underwear an important new accessory in fashion as well.

The “Lolita Look”

Ironically, the full sexuality of the miniskirt during the 1960s also played on a “school-girl” image, and London became recognized as catering almost exclusively to young girls between the ages of 15 and 20. The models on all the popular catwalks and fashion magazines were typically skinny and androgynous, with an almost prepubescent figure. Even Mary Quant’s husband and partner, Alexander Plunket-Greene, told Rolling Stone in 1987 that “at the time, there was a slightly sort of pedophile thing about it” (Cawthorne 1999). Indeed, the “Lolita look” was everywhere, and the fashionable woman of the 1950s, “all high-heeled and rock-hard tits,” was replaced by a London girl with a childish shape and a “great deal of long legs” (Cawthorne 1999).

The most famous model of the era was seventeen-year-old Twiggy (Leslie Hornby), who had a short boyish hairstyle, pale lips, and skinny figure (she was 5′ 7″ and weighed 99 pounds). Even though the miniskirt initially was an expression of individuality, women and girls alike copied Twiggy’s Vidal Sassoon geometric bob and her heavily mascaraed eyelashes in an attempt to achieve her “doe-eyed” little girl look. When young girls mimicked Twiggy’s fashionably gawky “broken limb” look, they were said to resemble little shop dolls or mannequins (White and Griffiths 2000). Not surprising, dieting fads and eating disorders skyrocketed during this decade (Lehnert 2000).

Decline of the Mini in the Late 1960s

The miniskirt of the “swinging 60s” lasted until the end of the decade. Throughout, fashion designers created some new and extreme variations in order to keep the excitement alive. For example, Paco Rabanne launched his plastic chain-mail miniskirt in 1966 and then the throw-away minidress. Despite this creativity, the mini eventually fell out of fashion when disillusionment about Vietnam became more widespread and the future looked less positive.

With increasingly political despondency, fashion became a little more nostalgic and hemlines fell back down to the ankle in 1969 in a style called the “maxi,” which was the longest hemline since 1914 (Cawthorne 1999). In addition, while the miniskirt initially was seen as liberating women, the development of terms such as “dolly birds” tended to objectify women, and feminists realized that the miniskirt had great potential to be more exploitive than liberating (Reilly 2003). With the feminist movement in full swing by the early 1970s, minis (whose hemlines had nowhere to go but down, anyway) fell into disfavor.

The Late 1970s Punk Revival of the Mini

While the miniskirt fell out of fashion in the early 1970s, the punk movement at the end of the decade helped revive the miniskirt, thanks in part to female rock stars such as Debbie Harry (Blondie) who were fond of wearing miniskirts on stage. The punks were motivated by anti-fashion and tried to avoid mainstream trends, which were considered bourgeois, bland, and over-indulgent.

Influenced by punk designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, whose shop SEX sold the fashion, the mini was reincarnated in black leather and PVC. The mini was also now often worn with ripped fishnet tights and took on a slightly “trashy” overtone that reflected the “whatever” attitude (Cawthorne 1999). In an ironic twist of fashion, once the punk look was picked up by designers, the punk movement’s anti-establishment edge became mainstream itself.

1980s and 1990s: The Corporate Miniskirt

The 1980s and early 1990s heralded a return to a more womanly figure in contrast to the adolescent androgyny of the 1960s. Rather than disappearing, however, the miniskirt was incorporated into the new, big-shouldered, “power” business suit for women, either in traditional pinstripes or jewel-colored wools (Cawthorne 1999). Popular characters in TV sitcoms such as Carrie in Sex in the City and Heather Locklear in Melrose Place helped the miniskirt appear sexy—and smart (Diamond and Diamond 2006).

Miniskirts were no longer considered appropriate only for teenagers, but they also became a power statement for sophisticated, long-legged, thirty-something career women who were in total control of their single life.

Mini Skirts around the World

For the most part, the miniskirt has been accepted in the Western world; however, not all countries and cultures embraced the short skirt. Inmany African countries, the miniskirt was seen not only as a corrupting influence of the West but alsoof the modern world.

For example, in Tanzania in 1968, at least one barmaid was stoned by a mob that supposedly disapproved of the shortness and tight fit of her miniskirt (Ross 2008), and politicians argued that the spread of AIDS would be halted if women would stop wearing miniskirts (“It’s in Our Hands”). And just this year, a strict Muslim father hired hitmen to kill his 21-year-old daughter because she refused to stop wearing miniskirts. After he paid the gangsters the equivalent of about $3,000, they kidnapped and shot her in the head on the outskirts of St. Petersburg, Russia (“Daughter Killed”).

Twenty-first Century Miniskirts

While the miniskirt has been met with disapproval and even violence, the tiny skirt shows no signs of disappearing. On the contrary, the miniskirt is still heavily featured on Western catwalks and in fashion magazines—and it is often shorter than ever. The phone company Samsung even introduced a new cell phone in 2008 called the “Miniskirt Season 2” which, while looking nothing like a miniskirt, is targeted toward women who like to “Talk, Play, Love” (Evans 2008). The miniskirt—variously known as the “micro-mini,” “pelmet,” or “bondage” skirt—continues to occupy a fascinating and paradoxical space in the fashion world as it teasingly attempts to cover and reveal at the same time. In all of its contradictions and reinventions, the miniskirt still provokes, challenges, and demands attention from both men and women alike.

Peter Falk

Peter Falk, the American actor who died on June 23 aged 83, is best remembered for his portrayal of the shambling, cigar-smoking detective Columbo in the television series of the same name.

Throughout the seven year long series, Falk came to share many of his alter ego's traits. Where Columbo would badger suspects unremittingly for a clue to their crimes and would waste their time with seemingly pointless questions, Falk would badger studio bosses for better quality scripts, and became notorious for his time-wasting wrangles with producers in order to win directors more shooting time.

The Columbo scriptwriters William Link and Richard Lewison admitted that in later episodes they based most of the character of Lieutenant Columbo on Falk himself. "Let's face it," Link recalled, "Peter was scruffy and forgetful, but at the same time he was charming and had a very good brain."

Columbo was a success as soon as the first episode was screened. The programme defied all the conventions of television detective drama. The viewer saw the murderer commit the crime, there were no car chases, no sex or violence, and Falk often did not appear during the first 20 minutes of the programme.

The success of the series rested with Falk's performance in the lead role. He invested the shabby, preoccupied detective with so much credibility that the show became one of the most successful detective series in the United States.

Although Peter Falk tried to revive his film career in the late 1970s when Columbo ended he never enjoyed the same success in films as he had done on television. After ill-fated projects such as California Dolls (1981), which featured a female wrestling team, Falk returned to television in a revival of Columbo.

"I held them off for 11 years," he remembered, "but my wife was sick of having me around the house, she said if I didn't go back to work she was leaving me." Unlike the uxorious Lieutenant Columbo, Falk's relationship with his second wife, the actress Sheralyn Danese, remained unpredictable. So frequent were their numerous break ups and reconciliations that they were known in Hollywood as the "Fighting Falks".

"She makes me laugh," Falk said of his 23-year-old wife, "but if I had to say what we had in common I guess it would be that we both like the colour blue."

Peter Michael Falk was born on September 16 1927 in New York City, but was brought up in Ossining in the shadow of the infamous Sing Sing Prison. His parents owned a general store and assumed that Falk would join the business on leaving school.

"I probably would have done too, except that I lost my eye as a kid," Falk recalled, "I wanted to succeed in everything after that to prove I was as good as everyone else." At school Falk became "a straight A student" and a fervent participant in all sports, particularly baseball and basketball.

In 1946 he attended Hamilton College briefly before trying to enlist in the Marines. "I memorised the sight test," he recalled, "but they wouldn't take me, so I joined the Merchant Marines instead."

Falk trained as a cook and spent three years sailing around Europe and South America. In 1951 he enrolled at Syracuse University to study for a bachelor's degree in Political Science and went on to take a Masters in Public Administration. On graduation he began work as an efficiency expert for the budget director of Connecticut.

In 1953 Falk began to develop an interest in acting. Distinguishing himself from fellow efficiency experts Falk divided his time between working for Governor Lodge and rehearsals with the Mark Twain Maskers. While working on an assignment as business manager of The White Barn Theatre, Falk met Eva LaGalienne who owned the theatre and who persuaded him to try acting.

"I wanted to act professionally," Falk recalled, "but I was scared, actors seemed such geniuses to me. Then when I heard them talking in the canteen I thought 'they're just like me, I could do that'." Falk made his acting debut as Richard III in a White Barn production before leaving for New York to pursue an acting career. He arrived in 1956 and within six months was cast in his first professional role as Sagnarele in Don Juan.

Throughout the late 1950s Falk appeared in numerous off-Broadway productions including The Changeling (1956), The Lady's Not For Burning and Purple Dust (both 1957). He made his Broadway debut as the young Joseph Stalin in The Passion of Joseph D (1964).

His film debut came in 1958 in Wind Across The Everglades and followed it with a small role in The Bloody Brood (1959). In his first two years in Hollywood, Falk won considerable acclaim for both his film and television work. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of Abe Reles in Murder Inc., a documentary-like treatment of the Mafia in the 1930s.

The following year Falk was nominated for another Academy Award for his role in A Pocketful of Miracles. He won neither of them. Later that year he did win a less prestigious Emmy Award for the role of Aristedes Fresco in The Price of Tomatoes.

During the remainder of the 1960s Falk worked consistently in numerous film and television productions.

He was interchangeable as either a thug or a policeman in television series such as The Untouchables, Naked City and The Twilight Zone, and played similar roles in films such as The Balcony, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (both 1963) and Robin and the Seven Hoods (1964).

Between 1965 and 1966 Falk won considerable popularity in the role of the barrister Daniel O'Brian in The Trials of O'Brian. Falk's performance as the dishevelled but brilliant lawyer brought him to the attention of Link and Lewison, who were looking for an actor to play Lieutenant Columbo.

At first Falk turned the series down. He felt that he was doing too much television and that he was becoming typecast as either a lawyer or a policeman. After much wrangling with the producers Falk finally agreed to do a pilot for the show and Prescription; Murder was made in 1968.

The film was a success and Falk began rehearsing the first series of Columbo in 1970. Columbo differed from every other police series on television in that the hero was an ordinary man who was unfit, worried about his wife, had a pet dog and wore ill-fitting suits. The producers of the series worried that viewers would tire of a show with complex plots and little action, and repeatedly tried to introduce elements of sex and violence. Falk made himself extremely unpopular by fighting these decisions and insisting on maintaining the quality of the original scripts.

Falk differed from other television actors because he demanded time to rehearse a scene. He became notorious for his regular arguments with both scriptwriters and producers. "Peter was a pest," recalled William Link, "he had strong opinions about our scripts, he wouldn't accept any change in the standards at all. In the end we let him write a script of his own to prove to him how hard it was."

Richard Lewison recalled that shooting, which should have lasted 12 days per episode, easily stretched to 13 or 14 days. "We knowingly used Peter's intransigence to gain more shooting time," Lewison remembered, "through his endless arguing he bought us much better quality shows."

Falk eventually left the series in 1977 after complaining that the quality of the scripts had deteriorated. He returned to his film career with a series of comedy roles in The Brink's Job, The Cheap Detective (both 1978) and The In-Laws (1979) playing both criminals and detectives.

In the early 1980s Falk's film career faltered when he made the unwise choice of accepting the lead in The California Dolls (1981) as the manager of two female wrestlers. But in 1989 Falk returned to the role of Lieutenant Columbo for one last series of films. He remained as eager to discuss production quality as he had been in the 1970s and refused to do the series unless he received the substantial fee of $600,000 per episode.

"It's not the money, it's the principle," he insisted. "I want them to know that I'm serious about the project and that I won't accept anything substandard."

Falk retained the battered raincoat and cigar which had been his trademark. He remained as shambling and preoccupied as in the earlier programmes, but critics began to complain that Falk's mannerisms had become formularised. Accusations that Columbo had become predictable confirmed Falk's fears, and he declined another series.

Peter Falk married Alyce Mayo in 1960. They adopted two daughters, and divorced in 1976. In 1977 Falk married the actress Shera Danese, who guest-starred on the Columbo series on numerous occasions. She and his adopted daughters survive him. [telegraph.co.uk]

What would you get if you took a two-wheel-drive motorcycle, rotated the wheels so they were horizontal, and replaced those wheels with fan blades? Why, you'd get a flying motorcycle, of course.

At least that's the hope. Australian mechanical engineer Chris Malloy has been working on his Hoverbike for two and a half years with the hopes of eventually selling them. Malloy estimates the Hoverbike will have a 10,000-foot ceiling, a top speed of 150 knots (around 170 mph) and a flying time of 45 minutes. The key safety feature is a parachute on your back and another two explosive parachutes attached to the frame, if you don't feel like ditching.

Sure it's a little suspicious that the tethered flying tests have only been documented with still photographs and no video, despite one (unsatisfying) video showing an engine airflow test, but like all boys and men I desperately want to believe the Hoverbike is real. Malloy is currently soliciting donations on his website to fund the project. (Glen, next time you see Malloy, tell him about Kickstarter for chrissakes. 'Based on this analogy, I am humbly suggesting that teardrop-shaped islands on Mars formed underwater in a relatively deep ocean,' said geologist Lorena Moscardelli of the University of Texas, Austin, lead author of a paper in the July Geology.

The study highlights similarities between the Mars land-forms and streaky sea-floor mounds off the coast of Trinidad, bolstering evidence for an ancient ocean in Mars’ northern plains.

Planetary scientists began suspecting Mars might have had a standing ocean in the late 1980s and 1990s.

Moscardelli believes that a similar process could have formed the teardrop-shaped islands on Mars. They suggest that craters from impacts rather than mud volcanoes guided fast-flowing sediment into a comet-like shape.

Moscardelli added: 'Most analogies between Earth and Mars are made using continental (on land) data sets or environments. I am providing for the first time, as far as I know, a deep-water terrestrial analogue.'

The streaky islands on Mars are between 3 and 30 miles long and cover 1.5 to 150 square miles. The size means that they resemble the erosion from deep water as opposed to land-based features carved by air. Lab experiments found that their triangular shapes only happen underwater, providing more support for the idea of an ancient standing ocean on Mars.

But planetary Scientist Devon Burr from the University of Tennessee said that Mars' lower gravity levels mean that the islands could actually have been formed by air. They would then appear to have been created by the strong pressure of being underwater.

"Tantric Orgasm:" Mystery, Myth, Misnomer?

Tantra has always known that the acme of sexual experience brings about a state of bliss that is a far cry from simply climaxing and produces a split from ordinary, waking consciousness associated with the ego. Changing planes of consciousness is therefore a well-tried means of transcending the ego and gaining access to a unitary cosmic experience. Going beyond the ego thus involves no mortification, no tedious asceticism which often creates more problems than it solves.

You may have noticed that in referring to this peak experience I deliberately avoided the word orgasm, both too specific and too vague, and chose acme, instead. I also discarded climax and paroxysm which both imply extreme tension that is totally alien to the Tantric experience. Without rejecting ordinary orgasm, Tantra considers that it is too dependent on mechanical, genital reflexes and prevent any conscious control. The female orgasm is a sort of spasm that is almost as irrepressible as the male's ejaculation. In this mysterious Tantric alchemy, the Shakti need not forfeit her genital orgasm on condition that the Shiva not lose his sexual control because of it: she must gradually transcend ordinary orgasm so that the energy thus awakened may activate the "heavenly" part of her brain. In the same way, the Shiva must go beyond his ejaculation, which implies that he has already mastered it. In both cases, the psychic, mental, orgasm is acme.

Both our sexualities, the genital one with its orgasm, and the cerebral one with its acme, unite in the Tantric experience, although the heavenly one is given top priority, it being the only one capable of opening the doors to cosmic experience.

Even without any Tantric initiation, some women may experience something very close indeed to the "real thing." A woman describes her experience as follows: "First, my feelings are concentrated at the genital region, then they flow over by great waves in my whole body. I become my feelings. I am all sensitivity. At times, I feel like singing, as if the sensations were reaching my vocal chords and made them vibrate on a still to be discovered tone.

"I have wonderful feelings of wholeness. It is difficult to describe this. I feel electricity running through my whole body and live intensely the bodily and spiritual union with my partner. At times, I pray God tto become united to him, and feel the bliss of ecstasy!

Obviously (and unknowingly), this Shakti awakened her Kundalini; her genital orgasm was the first stage of the rocket that propelled her toward another state of being, toward the heavenly experience which she herself explicitly locates in her brain (in the above quote the italics are mine) rather than in her yoni. Moreover her experience is spiritual, cosmic, and maybe even mystical, but it is unlikely that she will be able to reach this state each and every time. The same is true in Tantra. The Shiva must realize that if and when his Shakti reaches such a state -- and the ecstatic expression on her face will tell him -- she has become "disconnnected" from the species pole: the "best behavior" for the Shiva, in this case, is to stop moving, be still and psychically share the Shakti's experience.

In a way, Tantra has democratized the experience ith its rituals and processes which se the appropriate mental and corporeal conditions. True, this type of experience is not within the immediate reach of each and every women, be she a Tantrist or not. But it is also true that each and every woman is potentially capable of attaining it. Moreover, such an acme is not the only door to the state of cosmic fusion (cf. the chapter on the Path of the Valley). Furthermore, exercising her anti-frigidity muscles and sharing maithuna with a Shiva capable of ejaculatory control will gradually release the Shakti's dual sexuality and she will eventually be able to have such an experience and share it with her Tantric or non-Tantric Partner.

A journalist watches the video, showing a girl being held down by a group of girls. Among the students, the journalist counts 6 girls and 4 boys, and two of them are naked. They use the Kaiping dialect (Guangdong province). The journalist also spots the school uniform. One may wonder why it took so long for the police to get hold of such a video: apparently, it had been online since January, after being exchanged via cell phones. The following facts have been reported: the young girl had made some unkind remark to the girls, who found her in an internet bar, dragged her outside, took her clothes off, beat her up, then brought her to a hotel and called up 4 boys. I work in a pressurized alluminum tube and the environment outside my “office” cannot sustain human life. that being said, the human life inside is not worth sustaining sometimes…in fact, the passengers can be jerks, and idiots. I am often treated with no respect, nobody listens to me ..until i threaten to kick them off the plane…and have to literally scare and threaten people to conform to FAA requirements.

That being said, as a Flight Attendant, I have to baby-sit sick kids, serve fat people food that will only make them fatter, pretend im subjugated to trailer trash in first class who really only paid $160.00 each way to sit there (upgrade) and deal with various ailments and issues. Once I had a man run into the bathroom on final approach with urine flying out of his pants.

I’ve cleaned up puke, I’ve had to clean up people who soil themselves, and listen to my share of abuse why “I” am the reason their life has gone to hell in a hand basket when “I” wanst even 500 miles near them when the event occurred. My blood pressure has shot up since 9/11, Im constantly exhausted from flying 12-15 hour days, 4 leg turns , and endruing 8-9 hour layovers between 12-14 hour days. its inhumane.

I’ll never in my life forgive the mgmt at my airline for subjecting me to the hell on earth as a flight attendant I’ve endured while they hardly took any concessions worth speaking of and their work-day didnt change. bah. you can have this job. The events I speak of happen ever day im at work…when was the last time someone came into your office or cubicle and called you a bitch because you told them to fasten the seatbelt around their sleeping child (lets assume here your office can drop 100 ft in 1/2 second) or to put their seat upright so the people behind them can exit in an emergency during landing should one occur.

People change when they get on board an airliner and I can certainly reinforce to you its not for the better.

My mom only had one eye. I hated her, she was such an embarrassment. My mom ran a small shop at a flea market.She collected little weeds and such to sell, anything for the money we needed she was such an embarrassment.There was this one day during elementary school. I remember that it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed. How could she do this to me? I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school..."Your mom only has one eye?!" and they taunted me.

I wished that my mom would just disappear from this world so I said to my mom, "Mom, why don't you have the other eye?! You're only going to make me a laughingstock. Why don't you just die?" My mom did not respond. I guess I felt a little bad, but at the same time, it felt good to think that I had said what I'd wanted to say all this time.

Maybe it was because my mom hadn't punished me, but I didn't think that I had hurt her feelings very badly.
That night...I woke up, and went to the kitchen to get a glass of water. My mom was crying there, so quietly, as if she was afraid that she might wake me. I took a look at her, and then turned away. Because of the thing I had said to her earlier, there was something pinching at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my mother who was crying out of her one eye. So I told myself that I would grow up and become successful, because I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty.

Then I studied really hard. I left my mother and came to Seoul and studied, and got accepted in the Seoul University with all the confidence I had. Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I'm living happily as a successful man. I like it here because it's a place that doesn't remind me of my mom.

This happiness was getting bigger and bigger, when someone unexpected came to see me "What?! Who's this?!"... It was my mother...Still with her one eye. It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom's eye.

And I asked her, "Who are you? I don't know you!!!" as if I tried to make that real. I screamed at her "How dare you come to my house and scare my daughter! Get out here now!" And to this, my mother quietly answered, "oh, I'm so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address," and she disappeared. Thank good ness... she doesn't recognize me. I was quite relieved. I told myself that I wasn't going to care, or think about this for the rest of my life.

Then a wave of relief came upon me... one day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. I lied to my wife saying that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went down to the old shack, that I used to call a house...just out of curiosity there, I found my mother fallen on the cold ground. But I did not shed a single tear. She had a piece of paper in her hand.... it was a letter to me.

Mens Undergarments 1500-1900

Drawers Men’s undergarments are a bit easier to get a grasp of (hence the single page). By the Renaissance men were wearing woven versions of both boxers and briefs (braies). By the Eighteenth century these had elongated to reach just below the knee (just like the men’s breeches) and were simply called drawers. They closed just like the trousers of the era, with either a button fly, or a frontfall, and they buttoned at the knee. Some men didn’t bother with drawers, they just tucked their shirttails over and under and called it a day. By the Victorian era trousers had replaced breeches, and men’s drawers also got longer (sometimes reaching the ankle). The Union Suit made its appearance in the1890s (before which, some men wore a kind of chemise under their shirt, a layer of knit wool or cotton for warmth). Past Patterns (which specializes in patterns for taken from extant examples) has a pattern for men’s drawers (short Regency era ones and long Victorian ones).		Extant 16th century underpants.

From about 1600 on, pants buttoned closed in the front. When waistcoats and coats shortened in the late 1700s the closure was hidden by a flap that buttoned on either side like a bib (called a narrow fall or later, a broadfall as it widened). By the Victorian era men had returned to the classic front button fly which still endures today. Child’s IQ, lifespan depends on month of birth--study

Moms-to-be wishing for a healthy and smart baby should consider planning the time of child’s arrival, as a new study suggests that month of birth can determine everything from length of life to intelligence.

According to the researchers, babies born in spring (March, April, or May) are more vulnerable to a host of illnesses like asthma, autism, schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Also, spring kids are less smart and have a shorter lifespan as compared to their classmates born in autumn season, the study found.

The present study findings back previous U.S. research which found that those born in autumn live 160 days longer than those born in spring, the Daily Mail reports.

Wondering why? Scientists believe many of these differences can be understood by mother’s exposure to sunlight during pregnancy.

Sunlight is known to trigger vitamin D production in body, and a lack of this vitamin in first few months of the newborn can have long lasting effects on mental and physical health.

Can your birth month affect your health?
The study, presented at the ongoing Cheltenham Science Festival in UK, revealed that kids born in between April and June had shorter lives than those who were born in October, November, and December.

Researchers further linked child’s season of birth with multiple sclerosis (MS), with the greatest risk seen in inhabitants of northern latitudes, where sunlight is scarce.

For instance, in Scotland, April babies are 50 percent more likely to develop MS than those born in November.
Professor George Ebers, an Oxford University expert on seasons and health, said, “You should probably be aiming for a November birth if you live in Scotland.”

Interestingly, scientists dubbed April as the cruelest month as babies born in this month are more likely to suffer from alcohol abuse, asthma, low IQ, Parkinson’s, eating disorders, MS, autism, diabetes, etc.

Similarly, infants born in spring months were likelier to have asthma, Crohn’s disease, and schizophrenia.

Study findings remarkable--experts
Professor Russell Foster, an Oxford University neuroscientist and expert on seasonal biology, said the conclusions were ‘surprising and remarkable’.

He added, “These are small effects but they are very, very clear. I am not giving voice to astrology – it’s nonsense – but we are not immune to seasonal interference.”

Male fish often take care of the young but in the gender-adapting fish the leading male will change into a female when a larger male moves into the group. The gender change takes between 4 and 10 days. If the larger male moves on again the other one will change gender again. It is thought that the male great white shark also changes gender when it gets older, possibly as a way to ensure the life of the species.

Not much such luck if you’re an ugly bloke without a job and think you might do better as a woman. Gender-changing operations are expensive. Rather keep looking for a job. After all, there are some guys who have made a lot of money even though they’re ugly.

The first successful human sex change took place in 1950 when Danish doctor Christian Hamburger changed GI New Yorker George William Jorgensen into Christine Jorgensen. It was not the first such operation: in 1930, German doctor Magnus Hirschfeld removed the testicles of Einar Mogens Wegener, who would become Lili Elbe. Further operations were performed by Dr. Kurt Warnekros in attempt to transplant ovaries and a uterus but Lili’s body rejected the transplants and she died in 1931. Saint Bernadette

A mummy is a corpse whose body has been preserved by either intentional or incidental exposure to chemicals, extreme cold, very low humidity, or lack of air. Mummies of humans and animals have been found throughout the world – both as a result of having been embalmed and because of natural preservation through unusual conditions. Many mummies are thousands of years old and are famous because of the intriguing circumstances of the death or the remarkable preservation of the body. The following are ten of the most fascinating mummies, (mainly because of the story behind them or the incredible preservation of the body) most of which are still viewable today.

10. Elmer McCurdy

Elmer McCurdy

Elmer McCurdy (January 1880 – October 7th 1911) was an outlaw killed in a gunfight in the Osage Hills in Oklahoma. A newspaper account gave Elmer’s last words as “You’ll never take me alive!” His body was taken to a funeral home in Oklahoma. When no one claimed the corpse, the undertaker embalmed it with an arsenic-based preservative and allowed people to see “The Bandit Who Wouldn’t Give Up” for a nickel, placed in Elmer’s mouth, whichthe undertaker would collect later. Five years later, a man showed up from a nearby traveling carnival claiming to be Elmer’s long-lost brother wanting to give the corpse a proper burial. Within two weeks, however, Elmer was a featured exhibit with the carnival. For the next 60 years, Elmer’s body was sold to wax museums, carnivals, and haunted houses.

The owner of a haunted house near Mount Rushmore refused to purchase him because he thought that Elmer’s body was actually a mannequin and not lifelike enough. Eventually, the corpse wound up in “The Laff in the Dark” funhouse at the Long Beach Pike amusement park in California. During filming of the The Six Million Dollar Man shot in December 1976, a crew member was moving what was thought to be a wax mannequin that was hanging from a gallows. When the mannequin’s arm broke off, it was discovered that it was in fact the mummified remains of Elmer McCurdy, who was finally buried in the Boot Hill section of the Summit View Cemetery in Guthrie, Oklahoma on April 22nd 1977, with 2 cubic yards of concrete over his casket so his remains would never be disturbed again.

9. Vladimir Lenin

Vladimir Ilyich Lenin (10th April 1870 – 21st January 1924) was one of the leading political figures and revolutionary thinkers of the 20th century, who masterminded the Bolshevik take-over of power in Russia in 1917, and was the architect and first head of the USSR. In 1918, he narrowly survived an assassination attempt, but was severely wounded. His long-term health was affected, and in May 1922 he suffered a stroke from which he never fully recovered. In December 1922, he suffered a second stroke that partly paralyzed his right side and caused him to withdraw from active politics. In March 1923, he suffered a third stroke that left him dumb and bed-ridden until he died on 21st of January 1924, aged 53, at his estate in Gorki Leninskiye. His body was embalmed and exhibited in the Lenin Mausoleum, Moscow where it can still be viewed today.

8. Saint Bernadette

Saint Bernadette was born Maria-Bernada Sobirós (7th January 1844 – 16th April 1879) and was a miller’s daughter from the town of Lourdes in southern France. Despite her body not being technically mummified, she definitely deserves a place on this list. From February 11th to July 16th 1858, she reported eighteen apparitions of “a small young lady.” Despite initial skepticism from the Catholic Church, these claims were eventually declared to be worthy of belief after a canonical investigation, and the apparition is known as ‘Our Lady of Lourdes’ – the Virgin Mary. After her death, Bernadette’s body remains incorrupt and can be viewed in the Chapel of Saint Bernadette in Nevers. On December 8th, 1933, she was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church.

7. Juanita

Juanita (“The Ice Maiden”) was discovered on the summit of Mount Ampato, Peru, on September 8th, 1995. She was 12–14 when sacrificed 500 years ago – a great honour for an Incan – they believed the Ampato God supplied water and withheld avalanches in return for human sacrifices. A young girl, boy and the skeleton of a woman were discovered in later expeditions, as were items left as offerings to the gods. The eruption of nearby volcano Mount. Sabancaya melted 500 years of ice and snow encasing Juanita, who was almost entirely frozen – her skin, internal organs, hair, clothing, blood and even the contents of her stomachpreserved , offering scientists a rare glimpse into the life of the Incas. Juanita was wearing clothing resembling the finest textiles from Cuzco and was the closest sacrifice to the Inca capital, suggesting she may have come from a noble Cuzco family.

Juanita was chosen as the most beautiful and innocent and would be ‘guaranteed eternal life with the gods’. As the other bodies were further down the mountain, they were not as pure and worthy as Juanita. It took incredible effort (and whole entourages of priests, villagers, provisions, water, as well as symbolic items used in the ritual – all carried on the backs of hundreds of llamas and porters) to hold sacrificial rituals in the thin air and life-threatening cold of Mount Ampato – 20,000 feet high. Juanita was killed by a powerful blow to the head and was probably given chicha, a strong hallucinogenic drink before the ritual was performed. In 1996, President Clinton saw a photo of Juanita and reportedly said, “If I were a single man, I might ask that mummy out. That’s a good-looking mummy!” Juanita is on display at the Museo Santuarios de Altura in Arequipa, Peru.

6. Ötzi the Iceman

Ötzi the Iceman (also known as Similaun Man or Man from Hauslabjoch) is a well-preserved natural mummy of a man from about 3300 BC (53 centuries ago). The mummy was found in September 1991 in the Schnalstal glacier in the Ötztal Alps, near Hauslabjoch, on the border between Austria and Italy. The nickname comes from Ötztal, the region in which he was discovered. He is Europe’s oldest natural human mummy, and has offered an unprecedented view of Chalcolithic (Copper Age) Europeans. The cause of death was most likely a blow to the head. The body and his belongings are displayed in the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, northern Italy.

5. Ginger

‘Ginger’ is the nickname given to the naturally preserved body of an adult man (believed to be the earliest known ancient Egyptian “mummified” body), who despite having died more than 5,000 years ago, had perfectlypreserved golden hair, and even toe and fingernails. Ginger was found in at Gebelein, Egypt, and dates to the Late Predynastic period, around 3400 BC, or earlier. Before mummification was developed, human remains were placed in shallow graves, in direct contact with the hot, dry sand, which absorbed the water that constitutes 75% of the human weight. Without moisture, bacteria cannot breed and cause decay, and the body ispreserved . However, it is uncertain whether Ginger’s mummification was intentional or not, though since Ginger was buried with some pottery vessels it is likely that the mummification was a result ofpreservation techniques of those burying him. Ginger is currently on display in the British Museum.

4. Tollund Man

Tollund Man

Tollund Man is the naturally mummified corpse of a man (a ‘bog body’) who lived during the 4th century BC during the Pre-Roman Iron Age. He was found in May 1950, buried in a peat bog on the Jutland Peninsula in Denmark, whichpreserved his body. The head and face were so well-preserved that at the time he was mistaken for a recent murder victim, however, he was later found to have died over 1,500 years ago. Autopsies have shown that the cause of death was hanging – the rope left visible furrows in the skin beneath his chin and at the sides of his neck, however, there was no mark at the back of the neck where the knot of the noose would have been located. The body is displayed at the Silkeborg Museum in Denmark, though only the head is original, and is attached to a replica of the body.

3. Rosalia Lombardo

Rosalia Lombardo was an Italian child born in 1918 in Palermo, Sicily. She died on December 6th 1920 of pneumonia. Rosalia’s father was so sorely grieved upon her death that he approached Dr. Alfredo Salafia, a noted embalmer and taxidermist, to preserve her. She was one of the last corpses to be admitted to the Capuchin catacombs of Palermo, Sicily and one of the most well-known. Her preservation is such that it appears as if she were only sleeping, hence receiving the nickname “Sleeping Beauty”. She is considered one of the world’s best-preserved bodies and it is hard to believe she died nearly 90 years ago. For many years, the formula that preserved her so magnificently was a mystery, but it has recently been discovered that she was injected with a mixture of formalin, zinc salts, alcohol, salicylic acid, and glycerin.

Formalin, now widely used by embalmers, is a mixture of formaldehyde and water that kills bacteria. Dr. Salafia was one of the first to use this for embalming bodies. Alcohol, along with the arid conditions in the catacombs, would have dried Rosalia’s body and allowed it to mummify. Glycerin would have kept her body from drying out too much, and salicylic acid would have prevented the growth of fungi. According to Melissa Williams, executive director of the American Society of Embalmers, it was the zinc salts that were most responsible for Rosalia’s amazing state of preservation. Zinc, which is no longer used by embalmers in the United States, petrified Rosalia’s body. “[Zinc] gave her rigidity. You could take her out of the casket, prop her up, and she would stand by herself.”

2 . King Tutankhamun

Tutankhamun (approximately 1341 BC – 1323 BC) was an Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty during the period of Egyptian history known as the New Kingdom. Tutankhamun was 9 years old when he became pharaoh and reigned for approximately 10 years, until his death. Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings (where he still resides) was discovered by Howard Carter in 1922 almost completely intact — the most complete ancient Egyptian royal tomb ever found. Eternal life was the main focus of all Ancient Egyptians, which meant preserving the body forever. Egyptians mummified bodies because they believed in an afterlife. Believing that the afterlife was much like life in this world they had to preserve their bodies so they would be able to use them after they die. Egyptian culture believed the body was home in the afterlife to a person’s Ka, Ba and Akh, without which it would be condemned to eternal wandering.

The Ka was a less solid duplicate of the body. Without a physical body, the soul had no place to dwell and became restless forever. The Ba was able to leave the tomb and revisit the dead person’s haunts in the mortal world. The Akh was the immortal soul that emerged when the Ka and the Ba united after the deceased person passed judgement. The mummification process lasted for a period of 70 days, applied to all classes of Egyptians – rich or poor. The 70-day mummification process was as follows: 15 days spent on cleansing and purification, 40 day drying period and 15 days wrapping and bandaging. Tutankhamun has become one of the most famous Egyptian mummies, his death mask becoming one of the most iconic images of the world today. The cause of Tutankhamun’s death is unclear and is still the root of much speculation.

1 . Lady Dai (Xin Zhui)

In 1971 workers in China digging an air raid shelter near the city of Changsha uncovered an enormous Han Dynasty-era tomb containing over 1,000 well-preserved artefacts, as well as “the most perfectly preserved corpse ever found”. The tomb belonged to Xin Zhui, wife of the Marquis of Han who died between 178–145 BC, around 50 years of age. Her body is so well preserved that when found it was autopsied as if recently dead and her skin was supple, limbs could be manipulated; hair and internal organs were intact; remains of her last meal were found in her stomach and type A blood still ran red in her veins. Examinations have revealed that she suffered from parasites, lower back pain, clogged arteries, had a massively damaged heart (an indication of heart disease brought on by obesity, lack of exercise and an overly rich diet) and was overweight at the time of her death.

The ‘mystery of Lady Dai’ has not yet been solved. Scientists believe contributing to her remarkable preservation was the 22 dresses of silk and hemp and 9 silk ribbons she was tightly wrapped in. Clothes filled the coffin, which was perfectly sealed, keeping air out. There were inner and outer tombs, which were more than 50 feet below the earth as well as the four coffins she was buried in, each inside the other. However, some scientists suspect the real key to her preservation lies in the mysterious unidentified reddish liquid found in the coffin she was discovered in. To intensify the mystery, two other tombs containing bodies in a similar state of preservation have been found close to Lady Dai – Sui Xiaoyuan and Ling Huiping. Her 2,000-year-old body is currently housed in the Hunan Provincial Museum. [linkinn.com]

After Report of Disappearance, Questions About Syrian-American Blogger

After this post about the author of the blog A Gay Girl in Damascus was published, Andy Carvin, an NPR journalist and expert at debunking Internet rumors, pointed out that none of the reports of the arrest of Amina Abdallah Arraf appeared to have been written by journalists who had previously met or interviewed her. A few hours after Mr. Carvin asked his network of followers on Twitter, “has anyone met Amina (Gay Girl In Damascus) in person?” he observed: “It’s just odd that I can’t find anyone who has actually met her in person.”

Although it remains possible that the blog’s author was indeed detained, and has been writing a factual, not fictional, account of recent events in Syria, readers should be aware that the one person who has identified herself — to The Times, the BBC and Al Jazeera — as a personal friend of the blogger, Sandra Bagaria, has now clarified that she has never actually met the author of the Gay Girl in Damascus blog. Ms. Bagaria told The Lede that she had also never conversed with Ms. Arraf face to face via Skype, but had conducted an online relationship with her since January entirely through Internet communications in writing, including more than 500 e-mails.

Last month, CNN interviewed Ms. Arraf, but also via e-mail.

The Lede has also discovered that some of the text posted on the Gay Girl in Damascus blog was previously posted online in 2007, in a blog attributed to the same author that was described by her as a mix of fact and fiction.

The text of the post below was revised to underscore that the Gay Girl in Damascus blog is currently the only source of the report that its author has been arrested. Efforts to contact Ms. Arraf’s family have been unsuccessful so far.

Original Post : According to a note posted on the blog A Gay Girl in Damascus, the blog’s author, Amina Abdallah Arraf, who has described herself as a Syrian-American taking part in the uprising in Syria, was detained on the streets of the Syrian capital on Monday evening.

The note, written by someone who identified herself as Ms. Arraf’s cousin, Rania O. Ismail, passed on an account of the blogger’s arrest provided by an unnamed eyewitness. Ms. Ismail wrote that Ms. Arraf, accompanied by a friend, was on her way to meet a member of a Syrian opposition group in Damascus at about 6 p.m. local time when she was “seized by three men in their early 20s. According to the witness (who does not want her identity known), the men were armed. Amina hit one of them and told the friend to go find her father.”

Ms. Ismail continued: “One of the men then put his hand over Amina’s mouth and they hustled her into a red Dacia Logan with a window sticker of Basel Assad. The witness did not get the tag number. She promptly went and found Amina’s father.” Basel al-Assad was an older brother of Syria’s current president who died before he could inherit the office.

According to her blog, Ms. Arraf, 35, was born in Virginia to a Syrian father and an American mother and holds dual citizenship. She began writing her blog in February and has been openly critical of the Syrian government’s response to the protest movement and her desire to see President Bashar al-Assad’s fall.

On Sunday, she wrote: “Today or tomorrow might be the last one for me; or, tomorrow might be the first day of the new Syria. Ben Ali is gone, Mubarak is gone, Saleh, they say, is gone as well. Assad has not much longer and I plan to see him go.”

In the same post, Ms. Arraf described her part in the protest movement and argued strongly that opponents of the government should not turn to violence:

    We went up north and helped spread sparks, in the cities of the plain and by the banks of the Orontes; we listened and we carried messages. Some were sent beyond this land, others were carried here in turn. And we heard people talking of frustration; we’ve been pushing so long, they said, and they kill us and we just die.… Why not take matters in our own hands and let them know? Take up the guns which are buried, uses bombs and make revolutionary justice.

    I for one pushed back against that; we want a new Syria, a break from all that’s come before. If we take power by killing and torturing, if we make summary justice and examples of Them, how are we different?

It is not clear if Ms. Arraf meant that she has helped to smuggle video as well as messages out of the country, but the risks faced by Syrian activists armed only with phones and Internet connections were made very plain in a chilling clip posted online just after her arrest. According to the Anonymous Syria Twitter feed, this video was recorded by an activist who was “shot dead while filming tanks shelling Talbiseh,” outside the city of Homs in central Syria:

Late Monday night, a brief update signed by Ms. Arraf’s cousin on her blog reported that a search for the missing blogger was ongoing:

    I have been on the telephone with both her parents and all that we can say right now is that she is missing. Her father is desperately trying to find out where she is and who has taken her.

    Unfortunately, there are at least 18 different police formations in Syria as well as multiple different party militias and gangs. We do not know who took her so we do not know who to ask to get her back. It is possible that they are forcibly deporting her.

A State Department spokesman told The Lede on Tuesday: “Officials in Damascus and Washington are working to ascertain more information about Ms. Arraf, including confirmation of her citizenship.” If the first chapter of a book posted on the Gay Girl in Damascus blog in February — described by the author as both an autobiography and a novel — is factual, her American roots are very deep indeed.

In this text, Ms. Arraf wrote that she was born in Staunton, Virginia, in October 1975 to Abdallah Ismail Arraf and Caroline McClure Arraf. The McClures, she explained, emigrated to Virginia from Ulster in 1742.

However, it is not entirely clear which parts of this autobiographical novel are fact and which are fiction. Much of the same text was posted almost four years ago on another blog, Amina Arraf’s Attempts At Art (and Alliteration), that first appeared online in September 2007. That blog began with a post that explained:

    This blog is… where I will be posting samples of fiction and literature I am working on. This blog will contain chapters and drafts.

    This blog will have what may sometimes seem likely deeply personal accounts. And sometimes they will be. But there will also be fiction. And I will not tell you which is which.

Ms. Arraf’s new blog has garnered her a lot of attention from bloggers and journalists in recent months. As soon as word of her detention was posted online on Monday, a Canadian woman who identified herself as an online friend of the blogger, Sandra Bagaria, immediately turned to social networks to try to draw attention to the case, alerting journalists and bloggers via Twitter. A short time later, a Free Amina Arraf Facebook page was set up to call for the blogger’s release.

In a telephone interview with The Times on Tuesday, Ms. Bagaria, who is in Montreal, said: “I have no news. I am working as hard as I can, we all are, to gather as much information as I can gather. I talked to Rania yesterday at the end of the day, but she had no news. None of us have any news. What we are doing now is alerting as many people as possible in Syria to get as much information as we can. The blog is very popular and since yesterday word has spread on Twitter, and now people are spreading the news very quickly.”

Ms. Bagaria added that Ms. Arraf had been hiding in “four or five different apartments in four or five different cities” across Syria since two young men appeared at her home in Damascus several weeks ago.

“Amina woke up in the middle of the night and saw her father outside talking to two young guys in their early 20s. I think they were there just following orders, they didn’t know what they were doing,” Ms. Bagaria said. Although the two men eventually left without arresting the blogger that night, Ms. Bagaria said, “since that day, we agreed they might come back for her. It was only a matter of time.”

One month ago, Ms. Arraf wrote that she had gone into hiding after her father reported that men had come looking for her while she was out blogging at an Internet cafe. In a post headlined “Gone Underground,” she explained that her father said: “They came back for you. This time, there’s nothing I can do. Go somewhere and don’t tell me where you are. Be safe. I love you.”

Two weeks later, Ms. Arraf told readers of her blog that she had been sent a fake message by someone posing as her partner, inviting her to a meeting at a hotel in Damascus.

In recent weeks, Ms. Arraf had traveled around Syria, sometimes in disguise and once riding inside a box in the back of a truck, Ms. Bagaria said. She added that at one point, the blogger donned an Islamic head scarf and posed as her father’s wife so that they could slip more easily through government checkpoints. “When she was traveling with her father, she was grabbed by a soldier who said, ‘What is a lovely young girl like you doing with an old man like him?’” Ms. Bagaria said. “There were crazy, intense moments when her heart must have been beating so much.”

Ms. Arraf started blogging a month before the first mass protests in Syria, but she wrote in the introduction to the blog that she was inspired by the fact that “The winds of change are blowing hard through the Middle East.” She concluded her first post by writing:

    A revolution is underway and all of us want to see it revolutionize every aspect of our societies, rethinking not just how the states are governed but also the role of women in these societies, the rights of sexual autonomy, and, yes, the right to marry who we love.

Two days later, in a post headlined, “Why I Am Doing This,” Ms. Arraf explained that her family’s political connections gave her a measure of freedom:

    I live in Damascus, Syria. It’s a repressive police state. Most LGBT people are still deep in the closet or staying as invisible as possible. But I have set up a blog announcing my sexuality, with my name and my photo.

    Am I crazy? Maybe.

    But I’m also aware of the winds of freedom and change blowing from one end of the Arab world to the other. And I want that freedom wind to bring with it our liberation, not just as Arabs and as Syrians, but also as women and as lesbians.

    Maybe it will happen. Maybe it won’t.

    But if I want it to happen, I have to begin by doing something bold and visible. I can, because I’m a dual national and have benefits of politically connected relatives, be more visible than many women here.

According to her friend, Ms. Arraf was concerned about leaving the country, even though the two women were planning a vacation in Rome this month. “She did not want to risk being trapped outside Syria,” Ms. Bagaria said. “She wanted to be part of what is going on there. She wanted to keep protesting every day, meeting with people and organizing community meetings. Tasmanian Farmers Host Women Who Rule in Japan Beef Trade

Some of the most influential women in Tasmania’s beef trade with Japan are visiting the state to ascertain for themselves the quality and value of our beef to the Japanese diet.

The women all work as sales advisors and food demonstrators in the Japanese retail sector. Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), which has brought them to Tasmania, see them as key players in the weekly shop, traditionally the province of women in Japan.

“Most food purchasing decisions are made by women in Japan, even when they are dining out,” says MLA’s manager of Japanese trade services Miho Kondo. “Many women in Japan are working professionally as well as looking after their family. They are also are more health conscious than men. We want to promote the healthy aspects of Australian beef, particularly iron, as many Japanese women suffer from iron deficiency.”

The party will visit John Bruce’s beef property at Circular Head today (Wednesday) and Paul Saward’s at Redpa tomorrow.

“The women in this group are not buyers and so would not normally come to Tasmania or Australia to look at our beef,” chairman of the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association’s Meat Council Brett Hall said.

“But the role they play in the retail sector is pivotal. Their opinions carry a lot of weight with their own buyers and with consumers.

“This trip will strengthen the relationship between Tasmanian producers and retailers.”

Japan is Tasmania’s biggest customer for beef with the Tasmania Feedlot at Powranna, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Japanese Aeon retail group, alone accounting for $45 million worth of beef exports a year.

40-Year Study Finds Elephants and Humans Are Remarkably Alike

After four decades of research into the social behavior of pachyderms, biologists have arrived at a remarkable conclusion: they're really not so different from us. The results of the longest continual study of elephants found that some behaviors many people believe to be unique to humans, like casting flirtatious glances or arguing about directions, are in reality quite common among these species as well -- except they never forget to pack their trunks.

According to a group of researchers who have been studying elephants for 40 years in Kenya's Amboseli National Park, communication amongst members of a herd is quite complex, bearing many similarities to a number of human tendencies and non-verbal cues. Close observations have reveal social relationships between elephants that is hardly a world apart from our own.

The results of the study, outlined in the new book The Amboseli Elephants, cite a number of elephant behaviors that most people could relate to -- such as a tendency for herds to 'debate' which direction to go before heading out on a trek. "It's wonderful to watch and a real process of negotiation," the book's co-editor, Phyllis Lee, tells the Daily Mail.

    The study provides further evidence for elephants' capacity for empathy. They have long been known to display human traits such as grief, but the research shows they may also wince at each other's pain.

    In one example, when a young elephant approached an electric fence, an older female 'looked alarmed, waiting for it to get zapped', said Cynthia Moss, who founded the Amboseli Elephant Research Project in 1972.

    Miss Moss told New Scientist magazine: 'Her posture and blinking eyes showed she was wincing.'

And there are plenty of other analogous gestures. Not unlike two people greeting with a handshake, elephants will intertwine their trunks as a polite 'hello'; flirtatious individuals were observed casting apparently alluring side-glances to a prospective; and even young calves seem to suckle on their trunks much in the same way a human child might its thumb.

What makes such a conclusion that human and elephant behaviors quite similar in many ways isn't for the particular gestures or customs alone, but for the complex emotional processes that manifest them in humans and elephants alike -- so it's puzzling that, in many places around the world, our destructive tendencies continue to be a threat to them.

Throughout human history, superficial differences in culture and language were used to form faulty foundations upon which to build perceptions of superiority and breed bigotry among peoples, but was left only to wither in the light of an understanding that ultimately more is shared than not. In light of such research which continues to suggest that the very essence of what makes us human isn't exclusively human, one can only wonder when other creatures, like elephants, will benefit fully from the remarkable capacity of our humanity.
